get Collaberal liquid or however its called, it`ll eat your computer.
Its the best thermal conductive stuff but it eats aluminum and its liquid :P
"Coollaboratory Liquid PRO Thermal Interface Material"
other than that get some mx-2.

Yes I use it. I got 32c idle with my X2 4200+ with the stock AMD goo and 26c with the MX2 so its pretty good.

yeah dont risk it, but it is the best stuff :P mx-2 is spectacular though, its the best thermal paste and second only to that risky liquid stuff.
mx-2 doesnt degrade over time either.

hmm, sounds like i might need to do a poll

Simply put, MX-2 cools slightly better than AS5, but it is non-conductive, which makes it a better options for gpu's too.

here are your best choices according to the people:

one big one small Arctic Silver 5, and an Arctic Cooling MX-2. I guess it's a duel between those two hehe.
Edit:nvm, seems like MX-2 already won lol. Conductivity is a strong factor. You dont want the paste to fry your junk in da trunk.

I switched to MX-2 from AS5 after reading a similar thread awhile ago, it is much better. No.1 for cooling and no.2 is easier to remover as AS5 over time seems to clog up.

i literally just put some on my new parts and i got to say a noticable difference, love the stuff go for it you will be very happy you did (ac mx2)

no no no. As5 is for noobs. (haha jk)
hard science goes for shin etsu (x23) compound. this stuff is amazing-- it literally lowers temps by 5-7c.
link: (if you have access to university listings--or just read the abstract if you don't)

I was looking for a good graph ( i found one some time ago--but I ran outta time. just google it and search--you'll find it)
Oh and this stuff is crazy expensive for TIM:
http://www.crazypc.com/products/x23-778d-50119.html
but if you go ebay you can find it for cheap.
MX-2 is better, but what matters is how you apply the paste, now what paste you use.
I have some generic silver stuff my uncle gave me (not AS5, but I just say that to prevent confusion) and it dropped my temps about 5c but the stock nvidia goo was really loaded on there. What you want is a very thin layer and to spread it out with a sandwich baggie.
Some people say to gob the stuff on with GPUs but it made no sense to me, I did the thin layer, came out fine.

i always thought a thin layer was the best also.

HAHA, yeah but just pick some up off of ebay. You asked which one is best, and thats the shin etsu x23, im not trying to flame anything, im just informing.
As5 is a silver compound while the x23 is an aluminum compound and
aluminum > silver at thermal conductivity, plain and simple.
the mx2 is more popular yes, and I believe that its prolly cheaper, but the x23 is the best.

here's a chart comparing shin etsu wit artic silver

slightly beats it. No mention of MX-2 in the chart, probably old review.
