I saw this post here (http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=35189&highlight=opteron+overclock) and hoped he'd respond with a "YES!", but apparently, he's perfectly content to handle it himself. Unfortunately, I'm not. System specs are on the side, with a sig 'cause I like to play with Photoshop :) . Basic question, got my new drives in this week, so I'm reloading winxp sp2 over the weekend. I've downloaded some of the tools and benchmarking/burn in software. Some I've seen/used before, some I've not, but the only experience I've had in OC, I caused some serious stress on a Tbird a few years ago, and it won't run stable unless I Underclock it heheh.
So, looking to NOT repeat this. I've tried following some of the OC threads, hoping I'd find a specific for the Opt170, but I've not seen one. Does anyone have any excellent hints? Or do I just need to bios it, and bump it a bit at a time til it breaks? Any guesses on Max? And the best noob question of all, what the hell do I start tweaking first??
Anyway, want to tweak that and my dual 7900's. I've not searched hard for those, but I'm going to look for that next. So. Anyone kind enough to take 10 sec and point me at the right thread so I can keep from frying my box this weekend? Thanks muchly :)

found a link indicating best-bet max by id on the chip.

Hmm...does a sig not show when you start a thread?

best start would be to drop HT multiplier to 4x, and start raising FSB about 10mhz a time. once u hit a wall raise core volts and up the FSB again.
heres a good thread:

Excellent, thanks :) I'll go digging this morning. Got her reloaded last night, and since I'm using a Biostar MB, thinking I'll tweak with the utils that come with it :)
