8800 gts g92 version is more poweful by a good bit. 9600 gt might give you a little better bang for the buck, depending on which you buy.

If your talkin G92 then the GTS is quicker... But only the G92...

The 9600GT is still a pretty decent card for the price though...

According to the latest Bit-tech roundup the 8800GTS (G92) is roughly 30% quicker than the 9600GT across all games and settings. In future games (and in more shader heavy releases) this gap will only grow.

However, price goes against the GTS, it is roughly £60 more expensive than the 9600GT and whilst its outright performance cannot be questioned its price/performance ration can be questioned when compared to the 9600GT.

The mainly problem however for the 9600GT is not the GTS but the 8800GT. Here in the uk for example the price difference between the two is as little as £20. IMO the 8800GT is worth the extra if not now but for future games that are more dependant on shader horsepower.

I just did a whole bunch of benching on my new 9600GT. So far, I'm very impressed with this card. I'm currently sitting at 745/1850/2100, with a 3dmark06 score of 13,456. I think she still has more in her. This beats my old 8800GT at stock. The 9600GT will never beat a 8800GT when they are both OC'd. That being said, I paid $169 for the 9600GT and $250 for the 8800GT. One other thing worth noting. With the OC, I idle at 32c and never break 57c in 3dmark06.

the 8800GTS smokes the 9600GT, but if you have a SLi mainboard, then 2 9600GT's are doing the same to a single 8800GTS, while they still maintain higher performance/price. The two 9600GT's will perform like a 3870X2.

I would say, since the 9600GT is a more recent addition to the nVidia family, get that, it has the best Dollar bill per FPS, but if you are an enthusiast, I would definately either take it a notch up and get the 3870x2, or wait for the 9800GTX or GX2 to come out mid to late march. These cards, when they come out, will also lower the price of the 8xxx family, just like the 3870x2 lowered the price of the 3870 from 224 to 189. If you plan on some really high end gaming, competitive online gaming like CS or Battlefield that requires good FPS, or you own crysis and want more than 60 frames per minute, the 9600GT is definately a good bet.
