View Full Version : 8800GT @ 1.3 vcore
so my 8800GT with a successful vmod (will post pics soon) is now running at 1.3vcore
clocks atm are 800/2000 and i feel i should be able to go further.....
i slowly increased voltage in roughly 1/20 - 1/10 volt inrecrements (the resistance change per turn seems to change as you go), testing clocks along the way and i settled at 1.3 and 800/2000.
since i was @ 760/1836 before it seems to me thats not really much increase, but at 820 core or 2052 shader or both it artifacts badly and i dont really want to go much higher than 1.3v
in any case this card is blazingly fast now, and since stock clocks are 600/1500 it means an overall gain of 25% frequency across the whole core.
thing is 3dmark o6 is only at ~12,900 marks now, so i feel i am CPU limited (core 2 duo @ 3.2) and it wont oc any higher, ive tried that soooo much, but 1 free Ghz is always nice (stock 2.2).
so what are peoples thoughts on the clocks? about right or should i be able to go higher? or should i put more volts thru it?
and im tossing up between an E8200 or a Q6600, as im not sure whether my board will support the 45nm quads.....
penny for your thoughts peeps.
EDIT: max benching frequencies are 840/2052 :D:D:D
EDIT 2: for anyone with an 8800GT reference board, with the driver loaded, in 2D the vcore is 1.1v, 3D is 1.15
i did the 1.1v bios mod but obviously thats useless. and with the vmod, even with maximum resistance (lowest voltage) the vcore jumps to 1.175v under 3D
cmon guys! over 30 views and nobody has ANY input?

Mr. Bumperson sir! With an awesome V-modded card like that (congrats btw:toast:), a Q6600, or my favorite a E8400 would make a perfect mate for that card. The E8200 is nice and the Q6600 will yeild higher benching scores, but the 8400 can do 4ghz 24/7 without it, or the rest of your system breaking a sweat! :)
cheers erocker, my max benching frequencies are 840/2052 :D (core/shader) which yeilds 12,977 o6' marks, so im definatly cpu limited.
so do you think a 45nm duo at 4ghz would be better for gaming than the quad? (will also be overclocked....)
actually i hear that vmodded cards sell for alot on ebay, so if i can get a good price for it i might go a G92GTS and vmod that!

Considering you can run a e8400 at a higher frequency, it's better for gaming and easier to OC. The quad gets better benching numbers. I've been running my e8400 stock and it's crazy fast! It's tough to find 8400's at the moment, but I did find this E8500 that's apparently in stock. Link. (http://www.shopdigitalliving.com/ssproduct.asp?pf_id=1011154687) fitseries may still be selling his 8400 here on the forums as well.
Ah, I see you are from Australia, perhaps you may have better luck finding a e8400. With any of the chips listed above you really can't go wrong. Perhaps, just find the best deal, and if it's a quad make sure it's G0 stepping.
one thing the card always did from day 1 is the weird low volume high pitch whine/buzz ive heard other 8800GT users talk about, any thoughts? RMA? i mean its never jeopardized stability, i just have the feeling that one day something is going to blow up lol.

Yeah, it's quite possible, as I had a x800xl that did the same thing, then one day, nothing out of it at all. The noise could be either the fan, which you can test by slowing it down while it's running, or you have power jumping circuit to something that obviously doesn't effect the card, but it will eventually. It may be affecting your card, but in such a minor way that you don't notice yet. Personally I would RMA it. One thing you could try would be using a lint-free cloth and some pure alcohol and try gently rubbing your card down to try to clean off whatever "flash" or excess metal left by the factory that may be causing the noise.
lol, the only bad thing is now ill have to flash an original bios, and remove every mod ive done (vmod, zalman cooler, vreg cooling) which is a decent amount of work really.

hey im considering the e4500 and an MSI P35 board, about what can i expect over my shitty board and x2?

You can expect to break the 10,000k mark in 3d06 for sure. It's like night and day, all I can say is go for it.
its a solid performer for the money you pay, highly recommended by me. but ive had it for 8 months and i want moar powaa :D (the E4500 that is, and love the 11x multi :D:D)

what about CSS, im tired of being capped at 130FPS max its kinda lame
yeah itll probably help that alot, and core 2's are pretty easy to get to the 3ghz mark.
so people, should i revert to stock and RMA? i might start a poll...

It's usually just a powerchoke coil resonating. Most cards will make a faint squeeling noise. My 8800gts does it, even my old ATI x850xt does it and that's gotta be coming on 3 years old, and still used for gaming every day by my little brother.
Thing is - would you rist recieving a card that doesn't overclock as well?
I would recommend leaving it. If the card does die because of that you can always send it back later.

Just so you know, i would try Higher on the memory, my 8800GS(which is a GT in disguise) does 1000memory easily because the DDR3 chips they used are 1.1ns? and are rated at 1000mhz
Nice on the core i can only do 700mhz core :( with stock voltages.
thank you thank you *bows* it is a nice core speed .... but ive tried alot on the memory and it wont stay stable at 2ghz effective.... ive heard that the Quimonda chips use slightly wrong timings and if i relax them it might clock higher?
still holding off a new bios cos even at 800/2000 its not perfectly stable.....itll ATi tool artifact scan for 45+ minutes, but some games dont like the speed...any thoughts?

For me i had little problems running @ 720 core with stock Volts but after running FURbench a couple times i found it was only stable %100 at 700, however the memory passed 1000mhz no problems TPU hit 1029Mhz with Memory on there 8800GS even.
Not that it matters much because @1000mhz thats pretty much the limit of any DDR3 Chip(besides Ultra insane memory and 8600GTS 2140Mhz memory), The Core matters the most because you ahve enough Bandwidth to transfer all that data that the core is clocking @ 800mhz!
well yeah im aiming for stability at 800/1998, just slowly upping the volts till i get there, but at over about 1.333v i get into OCP (over current protection) and the screen just goes black and Vcore hits 0.0v
and for any 8800GT users whom are interested, an 8800GT reference board, with the driver loaded, in 2D the vcore is 1.1v, 3D is 1.15
i did the 1.1v bios mod but obviously thats useless. and with the vmod, even with maximum resistance (lowest voltage) the vcore jumps to 1.175v under 3D
