I have an odd problem...when ever i try to open up my control panel it will not open. The hour glass on the mouse pointer starts up but it will not open the folder for the control panel.

I can not get windows update to work either.

I had this problem once Wsimp58. I found that it was ZoneAlarm that caused it. I must have denied a script to run and had checked always remember this. I just about gave up on it until I disabled ZoneAlarm.

Please post a screenshot of what processes you have running in the taskmaster.;) (Hit printscreen, open Paint, and paste in. Save as a Jpeg.)

Super sorry..forgot about system specs

Vista home premium 32bit
2 gigs of ram
geforce 8800 gtx
Asus Pne-5 mobo

Yeah i built it myself and everything worked fined up until about 2 weeks ago. It's still the original install from about 2 months ago.
Windows updates wont work( or open for that matter) and i cannot access the control panel options. I am pretty much just going start-settings-control panel and double clicking and it wont open.\\

Btw whats zone alarm?

Btw whats zone alarm?

its a firewall. try disabling/quitting/uninstsalling your AV and firewall, in case they're blocking it.

What antivirus and firewall are you using? (version numbers as well please)

just the windows firewall

might be time to format, and put an antivirus on this time.

Sorry, i cant help more than that.

this is what you do......

right click "computer" and click "manage"

click "services and applications" then "services"

now find the service called "Software Licensing" and right click it.

click "restart" (it's OK that it needs to restart readyboost and whatever else)

now your fixed!

this happens all the time. just remember how to fix it for next time :)

No, i have the real deal. I just didnt register it when i installed it so aftet a week or so i guess the "trial" period was over and it locked me out and gave me limited use of stuff. I think thats when all this stuff started happening.

just rearm it then.

start-> type CMD and hit enter-> type slmgr -rearm

vista isn't that bad.... people are just stubborn and dont want to learn. it's called ignorance(not talking about you Wsimp58). i have only found one problem with vista i haven't figured out how to fix.

ok if thats what happened, YES. you will need to re-arm it, and enter your CD key. The features got disabled because you didnt activate in time.

But i registered it when it pretty much locked down my system. So why would i have to do it again? It kinda does nto make any since.

its possible you were simply too late. the re-arm is a method that may fix this.

you can rearm 2 times for a total of 180 day trial period.

Yeah it has been a while since i made this thread but i havent really had the time/reason to worry with my problem until now that i have bought a new 24 inch monitor.

After spending some time going back through the directions i was given in this post nothing has fixed my problem. I am locked out the control panel still and i cannot access windows games and other features. My copy is registered but i am still having the same problem.

you'll just have to reinstall windows again, in that case.

You could try this Hotfix -

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936686/en-us

Or download SP1 if you dont have it,as I think this was fixed in the Vista SP1.

EDIT:If Windows Update is not working you can download SP1 standalone from here

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=b0c7136d-5ebb-413b-89c9-cb3d06d12674&displaylang=en

Also make sure you install an Anti-virus and run a scan with it as well.
