So, it's available just in case anyone wants it, but that's not the problem. IE8-WindowsXP-x86-ENU.exe

It says IE8 is also ok for SP3, which I have.
However during installation of IE8 I get the message that I don't have all the necessary updates, and to click 'download' to get that update manually.

I do so. There is one update. WindowsXP-KB946501-v2-x86-ENU.exe
I download it but when I try to install it it tells me that "Setup has detected that the service pack version of this system is newer than the update you are applying. There is no need to install this update".

So I go back to IE8, try to install, and I get the same message as previously, telling me to install that update. Duh?

I admit that I haven't checked. I have the beta version. But I think if the official release was out then everyone would have been getting it in their updates wouldn't it?

Also, this IE8 expressly says it's compatible with SP3. Why would it say so if SP3 hasn't yet been released?

Since you have the beta SP3, that may be the problem, may be IE 8 is compatible with the one they are going to release through updates? Just a theory.

maybe the ie8 beta isnt planned to be updated till after the rtm of sp3 is released, and it just dont like sp3 beta, if your anything like me and format your pc regularly, maybe it would be best to install ie8 on sp2 then install sp3, or just wait lol. BTW i tried out ie8 on mine ealier, and i know it is a beta but it is v buggy, more so that ie7, lol!

I cant open links in new tabs with IE 8. I like the flow of it and all, but I hate that it opens new windows. Really pisses me off. Not to mention, on this site, if I wanna see someones system specs, it puts them up at the top of the page, instead of where it normally is. also, the Thermaltake V1 cooling fan, its at the top where reviews and stuff are at and in the area where you'd log in. very buggy indeed...

sorry about your problems but Id probably just remove sp3, go back to sp2, install and as was said, try and update to sp3 again.

That's because the version of that update that IE8 requires is OLDER than the one in the BETA version of SP3, unfortunately, you can't downgrade security updates.

Run it in IE7mode. The IE8 rendering engine is completely fudged right now, it passes all webstandards tests (except Acid3 - no browser currently passes that) but can't actually render most pages correctly.

This is not actually an issue with the engine itself, but the page, and the code they use. IE7 and below use a different way of rendering, so when websites detect IE, they send a different version of the code to FF/Opera etc. So IE8s is receiving this code, but it can't render it properley, requiring you to use IE7mode, which currently, is not on-the-fly capable.

It's a BETA, unless you are interested in BETA testing and helping MS get it right this time then no, don't bother.

Thank you for the feedback. Guess I'd be sticking to IE7 and Firefox for now. :)
