View Full Version : Will Intel EVER release a 4GHz chip?

"The Netburst arch. will scale up to 10GHz." Um... It never hit 4GHz. :shadedshu I know you can just overclock and such, but overclocking is such a hastle. I seem to recall that Intel had a 4GHz Pentium 4 in testing but they refused to release it because of the cool requirements. Now, when Core and Core 2 came along, they said 'expect an increase in clock speeds' but I have yet to see an affordable 3GHz Core 2 unless you just overclock, let alone a 4GHz part.
AMD on the otherhand also said that they'd hit 10GHz as well, but I cannot think of an AMD part that got anywhere NEAR 4GHz.
Now IBM on thew otherhand... "The POWER6 has approximately 790 million transistors and 341 mm² large fabricated on an 65 nm process. It was released on the 8th June 2007, at speeds of 3.5 GHz, 4.2 GHz and 4.7 GHz[2], but the company has noted prototypes have reached 6 GHz..."
WTF??? Why is IBM rolling out such fast chips (I know there are COMPLETELY DIFFERENT) but Intel and AMD are stuck with the mentallity that a more cores is the solution.
Will we ever see a 4GHz Core 2\Phenom without overclocking needed?

cuz would you want to be replacing every cpu that burns up cuz you wanted it at 4GHz ?

lmao. Well, the aim of Core 2 so to get it running without a need for a fan on the heatsink and to have higher clocks, but Intel has seemed to have forgotten that.
Intel COULD put out the 4GHz parts if they invest in better OEM heatsinks. Cheap bastards and their over priced chips any ways... *sigh*

8400?

$269.99??? Better than $999.99, but it could be cheaper.... I guess by next year it'll cost less. :)
8400?
You don't understand. $270 is far too much for a CPU. If I was paying for the computer, I would be buying AMD, and I would buy a 5000+ black for $100. It won't do superPI as fast as the core 2, and it won't get a bigge EPENISMARK score, but as far as gaming in concerned it is on-par with the Intel chips. I spend $170 less and I get about the same performance in Crysys as mr $270 E8400, but OMG HE CAN DO PI IN 10 SECONDS LESS. So what? =]

Amen; I settled with a Pentium D instead of a Core 2 because most games are still requiring Pentium 4 @ such-and-such speed, not Core 2 Duos or Quads.

Whatever, i havent even got a job at the moment (well not a proper one anyway) and i could afford one, plus that price seems way too high, i only paid £127 for mine in the land of tax and gouging
£ is different from $ :)

My mistake, it's $250 at the egg. Still way too much for a CPU imo.
Amusia, I hope you paid very little for that cpu.

People spend weeks tweaking thier hardware to the maximum just so they can see how fast it will calculate PI? :wtf:
If this was based on productivity... fail.
Like F@H. If someone spends weeks tweaking to get thier rig folding as fast as possible, there's a very good chance that in those weeks, he could have folded so much more without overclocking at all rather than using those weeks to fold faster. He folds faster but folds less, so yes while you are folding faster you still got less work done.

Yes
You mean people really spend weeks of thier time being frustrated with thier hardware so they can see how fast they can do Pi. Sorry, not me... and I don't think I will ever understand why people do that. =\

Not my CPU, lol, but I'd love to have it... I paid $315 total for my PC off eBay, but when I bought it, it had a 400GB RAID setup and did not have the cooling it has now, nor did it have the DVD-RAM drive, and I uped the RAM from 1GB to 3.5GB; the RAID took a crap due to ppl popping breakers 3 times a day... :(
Still, my mobo is okay, and my CPU retails for $90 or so... I'd say that if I were to sell I'd still make a profit.
Sadly I have no way to buy any SATA drives until my IRS stimuls check comes in May, so for now I got my 150GB hard disk hooked up to my lone PATA adapter along with my combo drive, and my other hard disk, DVD-RAM drive, and Zip 100 are hooked up to an IDE PCI card. Maybe I should beg someone for an SATA hard disk...? lolz.

It's called competition, I can do it faster than you can stuff. Makes you feel all good inside when you know that you did it faster than the other guy.
It's a geek sport.
Yeah but you also spent a whole lot more money than the "other guy" did so you could beat him in a silly, meaningless benchmark.

Why is 4GHz so important? There are so many other factors that are just as important as how many cycles per second. Worry more about total performance than some factor that is only a component of the whole.

Same things as building drag cars that run for 10secs down the track. Why build a car that's only going to go 1/4 of a mile?
It's only meaningless to you, because your not into it.
You should not put down other peoples hobbies, and it's kinda those people that nugg company's like ATi/Intel/Nvidia to produce more and more faster cards and cpus.

Ah, but the x86/x64 platform can only be improved so much before clocks need to increase again. It's predicted that in 2014 transistors will reach the size of an atom and they will not be able to go any smaller, so the actual size of the CPUs will start to increase again as they add more and more cores to keep improving performance. I think they better start having break throughs with quantom computing.

I do have to agree with ppl sayin why waste $ to get a better score? Hell, if you want the BEST score, go steal an IBM super computer. :) (jk, jk)
EDIT: But I know how good it feels to have THE best as well... For some of us thou, we cannot afford the best, so we must settle for lower priced 'clones'

I dont even try competing in benches, i just wanted a better core 2 chip for gaming because my old 4400 sucked / ran too hot / needed too much voltage

*holds out hands* I'll take it, lmao. I bet it'll run circles around my 'lowly' Pentium D... Looking at specs, I think I have the 2nd 'slowest' rig on here (listed in the specs) I only saw one other dude with a Pentium D (805) but not sure who... it's in his sig too... *thinks* oh well...

There are different levels of this, hey I played all of last year with AMD chips and had a blast.
You don't have to take number one spot. I was just impressed that I had some of the best clocks for the same hardware that was around.
The top place is fun, like being on top of the ORB(the official 3mark site)but having fun with a few friends like on the TPU is fun as well.

To answer your original question is yes they will, they have plans to slowly release products.
If they released everything they had, they would have noting to fall back on. That would be bad business.

Well, I hope you enjoy it. :) lol. *points at the Pentium 3 tower on the floor* That's what I get to fall back on should my tower die, lmao. I need to get some $ to invest in a better PC and a better backup PC as well.

True... 3D FX seemed to have made that error... long devolopement times and few releases.

there was more to it than that . . . 3DFX was a niche company that specialized in extreme 3D accelerator performance solutions, and were ridiculously over-priced. They were kinda left behind by the market, as they couldn't get out of the hole they dug trying to prove and keep their performance crown (sound familiar? :D).
