I heard a little while ago that ATI was coming out or came out with the technology to crossfire 2 different cards together to use like crossfire, i was wondering if it is possible to crossfire a 2600XT with a 2900XT and have a performance increase with the driver/patch?

AFAIK
hybrid crossfire= powersaving feature to switch between IGP and seperate gcard
crossfire x = 2 different cards in crossfire.

Give this (http://enthusiast.hardocp.com/article.html?art=MTQzMiwxLCxoZW50aHVzaWFzdA==) a whirl.
Hybrid Crossfire is coupling one video card with the integrated GPU. Now people with one video card can still use Crossfire! It actually looks pretty promising.

No. Only Crossfire X compliant cards will. The HD 3000 series cards are Crossfire X compatible, not HD 2000 or earlier.

The worst that will happen, is that your whole computer will catch on fire!
lol, no but seriously nothing will happen you can only CF Similar cards, I.E. 2900XT with a 2900XT, 2600XT with a 2600XT, etc... if you put them both in, you will see no CF options of performance gains; the only thing you will be able to do is run 2 more monitors :)
