Ok, I have built many AMD rigs and decided to go Intel. I have installed a Q6600 in a Gigabyte X38-DQ6.
I aligned the notches of the processor to the socket's alignment keys, then placed the load plate over the CPU, then slowly put the lever back into position.
My question at this point is, should I hear a click, or should it be a totally silent connection.

Mine clicked, at least I hope it was a click and not a crack
Thanks for your help.

Thanks for your help. It's a tight fit, so it sometimes will make noises. If you are in doubt, the best thing to do is to re-seat it, thoroughly checking the cpu and socket while you have it out.

I never heard any clicks or cracks. As Wile E said it is a tight fit, but just go slowly, check the socket, and you should be fine.

Metal does sometimes "crack" but never actually breaks...if that makes sense lol.

The sound is similar to squashing a hairbrush on a hard surface... but nothing more.

Thanks for the input ;)

I took the cpu out and it appears ok, and the socket showed no bent pins, chips or cracks for what I could see, even used a magnifing glass to get a good look :)
After reinstalling the Chip I got the same sound, but this time expecting it and it turned out to be the lever making the noise. Guess once I fire up the rig it will tell the whole story :o

Anyway here are the components to the new rig :pimp:

Case - Coolmaster 690 < Old I know, but it was cheap
PSU - PC Power and Cooling Silencer 750 Watt Crossfire Edition
CPU - Intel Q6600 SLACR MALAY
Cooling - Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme with 120mm fan
MB - Gigabyte X38-DQ6
Memory - OCZ Reaper 8500 4GB (2X2GB)
Graphics - ATI Radeon 3870X2 1 GB DDR3 <only one for now :rockout:

Keep you posted once done.

if it's a brand new chip, it usually makes a crunching/clicking noise. it's not a bad thing. it's just the PCB of the CPU flexing for the first time. it's happend to almost every new 775 chip i've owned.

:) Whoohoo system fired up without a problem. :rockout:
No OS yet, gonna be installing Vist Ultimate 64 soon. This will give me time to learn all the new bios settings and on to OC'ing this Intel chip. :respect:
But man this 3870 X2 sure puts out alot of heat even when veiwing bios. Damn case is running at 38c.

Great choice of motherboard btw:toast:

If you've gone from amd to a intel quad prepare to be amazed!! lmao:laugh: welcome to the darkside!!

That vista 64bit os might give you alot of headache though im afraid
i think you're gonna need sp1 to get that x-fi working. and thats just the start.

:toast: Thanks, and that's why I'm not getting rid of my presant rig till I get Vista beat to shape.
No Ex-Fi on new rig, gonna give onboard a spin.

Hows it going so far?

You'll probably get 3ghz on stock voltage any higher you'll have to give it some more vcore and maybe a slight NB adjustment depending on what fsb you are using.

dissabling the CE1 in the bios and the EIST function can help.and the TM2 or TM3 what ever thats using.
Dont forget to manually set you pci-e slot to 100mhz leaving it on auto can overclock it and cause instability.

 Decided to hold off a bit on overclocking and let the system burn in. :o
Damn sticker on the Vid card is starting to peel off the cooler already :banghead: It's the Sapphire card, nice picture too, ah well off it's gonna come. :shadedshu

mines not had that problem runs cool infact 38c idle 55c load? you havent obstucted the vent at the back have you? Try riva tuner mate if you are worried about the heat turn fan control up to about 50% should be good then, for some reason the 8.3 driver put my temps up quite alot
.
TBH i dont know why they put a sticker on there once the cards fitted you cant see it.

Sapphire didn't bundle a game with the card but gave me a full version of 3DMark 06 :)
So I decided to install it and give it a spin at stock speeds, and default settings.
 8864 was the score, and the CPU score was 1889  Excuse me, like WTF??? My 4600+ was 2133. :banghead: Defraged, rebooted, checked bios settings, installed the 06 hot fix, ran tests over and over.

Ran SuperPI 1M and got 20s. :respect:

Did a search on the problem and most posts pointed to the 8.3 cats :shadedshu
Uninstalled the 8.3's and CCC, Ran Driver Cleaner Pro, installed the 8.2's but couldn't get CCC to run, kept giving me a Send Report to Microsoft Popup. Never liked CCC anyway and didn't use it. :nutkick:
Ran 06 again and "YES" :respect: scored a 13989 at default settings. CPU score came out at 3760, nice increase :rockout:

Card is running at 51c at idle with fan at 35% when I had the 8,3 CCC working. Gonna give Rivatuner a spin as I need fan control.

CPU cooler is doing a good job, 31c average at idle, 38c average at load with an anbient temp of 38c. <-- Gotta work on getting that down.

Sticker on GPU cooler is about 75% off now  I don't want to pull on it due to the weight of this card. :ohwell:

If your ambient temps are 38C, your cpu is not idling at 31C. Air cooling cannot go below ambient temps.

What are you using to measure temps? You need to be using CoreTemp or RealTemp.

Raovac

:o I knew that  :shadedshu

I'm using coretemp for the cores, but made a mistake on the ambient temp. It's actaully the board temp through bios. Sorry about that :banghead:
