If you find a way to open that case it'll probably have a PATA drive inside it. I have one and can't figure out a way to open it without damaging it.

I know that my Seagate Freeagent is a SATA drive, as someone online popped it. There's a small screw that's almost impossible to get to and unscrew on the underside.
One note, though. The HDDs used in external drives are almost always bottom of the barrel. That's why they can sell them at or near internal drive prices, because they don't perform nearly as well as drives sold for internal use, so the money they spend on the casing and adapters is worth spending to get rid of the drive.
I wouldn't do it. I'd look out for a good deal online, or get your posts up and post a [WTB] (want to buy) in our For Sale forum.

Well that depends on what else you have on that IDE channel. If there's nothing else put it as master or just take the jumper off completely.

There's usually a "CS" or Cable Select on IDE drives. Not sure about SATA, but I don't think it matters on SATA anymore.
