I will be getting the GIGABYTE p35-DS3L from mwave . and they say they can update the board to the latest bios for me as i want to get q9450 processor and dont have any other socket 775 socket proc to update the bios myself .
can i put the mobo in the case and connect video card to monitor and turn on the mobo so that it may show me the bios. that way i can decide whether to buy q9450 or q6600 ?

No, becuase BIOS talks to the CPU on startup. If nothing can talk tot he BIOS, it'll just halt or go into error mode.

If I read your post right, you said they will update bios for you. Right? So get your 9450. That board won't run 45nm chips natively?

Often a PC WILL POST with an unknown CPU. Basically, most BIOS runs on "legacy" x86 commands... meaning you can get as far as POST and floppy BOOT. So if you have a diskette with the updated firmware, you should be able to flash it with the Q9xxx.
Remember what the BIOS update will do:
1./ Recognise the CPU ID and therefore state the processor and features correctly
2./ Apply the micro-code patches to make the CPU fully compatible with software. However, these micro-code patches arent required for running the BIOS boot sequence itself.
