Major problem: X800 series and Catalyst 8.3 and OpenGL

OK, after hours of frustration, including "underclocking" my PC to try and get the system stable, I discovered the root problem: Catalyst 8.3. After drivercleaner and reinstall of 8.2, 100% stable again.

ISSUE:

1./ Cat 8.3

2./ X800 series

3./ OpenGL benchmarks or games, e.g. Furbenchmark, SOF2

4./ Unrecoverable freeze/blank screen. (No BSOD, only "death" requiring power-cycle)

FIX:

1./ Remove Cat 8.3

Hmm, I have an X800 GTO2 modded to X850 XT and the 8.3 drivers arent causing me issues. Funny thing is, its the 64 bit drivers for use with Windows XP/Vista 64 bit..

Hopefully ATI will have a hotfix for these that will make updating to them not that big of a hassle. Glad to see you got the problem straightened out too.
