View Full Version : New mobo or not?

Ok I have a couple of questions.
Im going to buy myself a e8400 to replace my e6400. Im not thinking of a Quad because I will probaby upgrade again by the time quads become used by regular apps.
Now I am not sure what to do with the mobo. I currently have my P5B deluxe which does support the 45nm CPU's @ 1300FSB. (I got the latest BIOS).
I was thinking of getting a motherboard with an X38 chipset, but wondering what the benefits would be for me.
I know it will OC better and I will get the full 16x bandwith on both PCIe slots, but I dont have crossfire anyway, and (probably) wont get it anytime soon. I went straight past the P35 chipset because I see no benefit from it; it might OC better but it still doesnt have the full 16x on both PCIe slots, so if I am going to upgrade I will go straight to X38 (not going near X48 @ the prices they are at :p).
So do you guys think I should upgrade or hold out with my P5B deluxe? I will overclock for benchmarking/reviewing and all, but generally will leave it on stock (my e6400 runs stock all the time).
Also, another question is: What justifies the price difference between DS4/DS5/DQ6? Besides the cooling on the mobo, they all look the same to me :wtf:. I wanted to get an ASUS board but again, the prices are just too high (cant go above $300 AUD, but want to be spending around $200).

The differences between the DS3/4/5 have to do with features, as far as I/O is concerned, and BIOS options.
An ASUS P5E, GB DS4/5, or a Foxconn X38A would all be great choices for X38 boards with the lower entry fees.
But overall, why do you have to get X38 if you don't plan to go Xfire? It's just wasted money really. P35 is much cheaper, and actually clocks better on average, and good ones probably have more features than you're gonna use already.
I honestly recommend going P35.

If you are going to hold out for the Quads then by that time you would get a better choice if you wait and upgrade the motherboard at the same time wouldnt you?
Pardon my spelling.

I see. Thx for that :). (Always helpful WileE lol)

Well thats the thing. Its not like im going to be a heavy overclocker, so even a P35 wont be worth it :p (Keep to P5B deluxe? lol) I do want to overclock, but as I said, it will only be for benching/reviews.
There will only be a ~$30-50 diff between a P35 and X38. So, if I ever do go crossfire (for example, if they dont release some new DirectX 12 that needs new GPU's and makes my 3850 obsolete and getting a second one pointless) then I wont again have to replace motherboards and crap. If my current P5B deluxe had 2x 16 slots and the X1950 PRO worked with DirectX10, I would have an X1950 PRO Xfire setup instead of this 3850 (if you get what I mean).

Your spelling is fine :).
And thats the only reason I am considering just sticking to the P5B deluxe, because it may just not be worth getting a new motherboard.
just keep your mobo should OC good with that CPU and the 9X and your just going to run it stock for 24/7

Then again Dom, you have the added factor of his e6400 being overclocked against a stock e8400. I know for a fact I would get the e8400, but I wonder what kind of performance difference he would obtain from that on just his current board.
But then again added to this point, Pinchy ddoes not overclock much, and when it is done is just for benches.
IMO, Pinchy, You would be truly happy with a P5E.
clock for clock the E8400 if faster even lil more cuz the E6400 has only 2MB of L2
and I run mine bus speed @ 450 24/7 which should give him 4050GHz
but theres no point of getting a new mobo cuz theres not much of a performance increase on the newer chipsets besides the 2 X16 PCI-E

Im getting the e8400 because I am getting a good deal on my current e6400 (the e8400 is only costing me like $50 after sell/buy :)) If it wasnt for that, I would keep my e6400 because I dont need more than 2.1Ghz, its fast enough for everything I do (thats why I dont overclock. I mean, why would you want to go faster and lose life on your parts when the current speed is good enough :))
The reason I am considering a new mobo is because I have seen the P5B Deluxe sell on ebay (used) for $150 + 20 post, where a brand new EX38-DS4 would only cost me $220 shipped OR an X38-DS4 (without the E) is $199.
As I said, I am not looking for the P/G35 chipsets because its not that much more expensive to go X38. The cheapest P5E is the ASUS P5E-V (G35 chipset) and thats at $198 shipped.
Im just not sure how this P5B is going to overclock because the e8400 already has the stock FSB of 1333, and i'm not sure how much more this mobo could take. If I could guarantee that my P5B would sell for $150 clean, I would def. go with it, but we all know how random ebay is and one day it can go for $150 and the next <$100 (and then we get ebay fees and all that crap).

As I mentioned, would anyone know if the P5B overclocks well with these new 1333FSB chips? If I wait it out (like till DDR3 becomes mainstream), I can get 2-4GB of DDR3 as well as the brand new mobo with dual PCIe 16x slots (and if the HD3850 isnt outdated by then I can get a second one ;)) BUT then my P5B dlx wont sell for anything :p....

Thx frogger, will check out the link.
BTW peeps judging on the overclocking results of this P5B it looks like I might stay with it, unless I can get a sweet $150 deal on it from someone .

Thanks for the links Dom. I found them all good reads. On that note Pinchy, if you got the cash and want to buy, a newer chipset can't hurt (or can it?).
If I could sell mine for $150 I would get a new mobo but im going to take a nap with the baby :p
so did you already order the E8400 ?

Well hopefully a new chipset wont just spontaneously melt my entire computer
...But, the chipset wont hurt, but my pocket will. For 50 bucks I can get another 2GB of RAM and stop these Vista low RAM errors (got pagefile off, lol). Ive always *tried* to get the idea of "if you dont need it, dont waste money"...but I tend to spoil myself sometimes (and make myself believe its a great deal), but it doesnt help when I have uni fees to pay .

Gonna ring up the store tomorrow to check if they got stock. If they do (which I doubt) I can pick it up tomorrow :D
Ill continue to post back in a couple of hours when I wake up :)
Thx for the help all :D
