View Full Version : Can't overclock with new RAM

Hey,

I just got some new RAM, (http://www.gskill.com/en/f2-6400cl4d-hk.html) and now I can't overclock my CPU at all. When I try, my board doesn't even attempt to post. With my old generic sticks, I could do 3.2GHz, with these I can't even go to whatever it is that my motherboard Enhanced Mode takes it to. It's running at 2.05V, which it's supposed to be, and I still can't overclock. Any ideas what could be causing this? I can't RMA, as this wasn't bought by me. At stock everything it runs fine.

Did you reset CMOS upon putting in the new sticks? What do have its timings currently at?

Ben Clarke

Yeah, I reset the CMOS. CPU-Z reoprts timings as: 5-5-5-15-21. I havn't changed them yet (though they shouldnt be that... they should be 4-4-3-5-/?)

they have lifetime warranty

Yeah, but as I said, I didn't buy them (I got them from another TPU member) so I'm pretty sure that terminates the warrantly on them...

Actually it doesn't. Still either way, it's not the ram. Whats your ram multi/divider set at? I am just trying to think of something that you could've possibly missed when attempting to clock it back up.

can you run stock cpu and mem at 800Mhz ?

Did you manually reset the voltage after you reset the BIOS? If not, they're running at JEDEC specs, aka: 1.8V. Double check your BIOS settings. Make sure you set them to 2.1V 4-4-3-5. Also, if you are trying to get more from your CPU, it's probably a good idea to set them to 1:1 with your fsb for now, until you figure out your max cpu speed.

I've never seen an option for that in the BIOS.

That's what I'm posting this from.

Your ram strap is derived from the speed you set it to in the bios. For your system at stock clocks, you set the ram to 800MHz for the 2:1 strap.

What you want to do while trying to max your cpu is, set the ram to the lowest speed. That's 1:1 on Intel boards.

As I said, there'n not an option to do that. At least, not one clearly labelled...

EDIT: Wait, you mean set it to 533MHz? (or 400, not sure which is the lowest it allows)

yes 533mhz should be it

OK, I manually set the RAM to 400MHz, and now I'm at 3GHz on the CPU. However, my RAM is only running at 567MHz now... will I notice a performance difference, or do I need to do something to make it go up and get more performance? I'm going to try for 3.4GHz, brb..

Set the fsb to 400. :D

Yeah, OK, 3.4GHz doesn't work. Gess I'll need the 400FSB for 3.2GHz.

cuz what do you have to pick for the mem at 400fsb ? what comes out ?

Set your ram for 533mhz in bios. Essentially that should be a 1:1 divider.

Ben Clarke

OK, just below 800MHz at 3GHz (375Mhz*8) And it's fine. I think I'll keep it at this. Thanks guys.

No, his chip is 200fsb, so 400Mhz is 1:1.

@Ben - I could get CAS3 out of the same kit at that speed. Might want to give it a shot.

Yeah, I did try that originally. It POST's, but won't boot into Windows.

OK but if you look at:

That would mean he is running a 5:4 divider. I must be lost here.

Your are, lol. :D

400Mhz is DDR speeds. Real speed is 200Mhz. His stock bus speed is 200Mhz. 1:1

Oh crap, I thought he posted that at 3.2GHz!:banghead:

Doh, I need a big huge n00b slap! :slap:

EDIT: But still even at that an e2140's multi is 8. 8x375fsb = 3Ghz. 1:1 375mhz = 750ram. But eh, I think I am still lost here.

He was running at stock when he set the strap. And he said he's running below 800Mhz @ 375 fsb.

You OK now buddy? lol
