Q6600 is a better buy for the money atm...Why vista Ultimate? Home-Premium 64-bit has most of the necessary fetures and is $XXX cheaper (theres the money for your gpu later on).

Do you plan to multitask the heck out of your system? If not and you want more performance for gaming then spring for a faster dual core instead of a quad. Most software and nearly all games do NOT take advantage of multi processors. Even with a dual core you will notice one core ramp up and the second stay much lower on utilization.

For the same money you can get better gaming performance out of a faster dual core.

Yea I would recommend Q6600 if you plan on overclocking. The Q9300 only has a multi of 7.5 so your max overclock will be pretty limited once you hit the FSB wall. 500FSB x 7.5 = 3750MHz. With the Q6600 you should be able to run 450 x 8 = 3600MHz and run your ram 1:1 at 900 MHz with 2.2v 4-4-4-12 T1 and maybe push it abit farther.

+1

E8400 would be a good choice aswell....it has a multi of 9.

thanks for the feed back guys
i probs would overclock the cpu alittle but am not too good with stuff like that havent managed to get much out of my old rig al have to look around. id prefer to get a quad core over a dual because itl be along time before i upgrade again so want to get what i can now so itl last for atleast 3 years or so. i used windows vista ultimate when it was out on RC1 and 2, and really liked it.

would you guys recommend the new geforce 9800gtx mite look into getting 1 over the summer when i get abit of money saved up or just sli 2 9600gt's for the same price

always take one powerful card over two less capable cards. With the 9800 you will have the ability to 'double up' later by getting another one and setting up SLI, thus future proofing your system even more.

thanks alot for the feed back
didnt think of that. al wait until i have money in the summer for 9800gtx id imagine 2 9600gt cards wouldnt be much better than 1 9800gtx anyway.

If it's gaming you're interested in, lower your cpu expectations cause they might not deliver what you hope they will, whether you go for wolfdale, kentsfield or yorkfield. Today's games are GPU driven, and graphics cards are therefore key to good gaming.

If I were you, I would try the second 7800GT card in SLI first, even if just for a test, before ANY OTHER upgrade and depending on gaming performance, take it from there. :)

As already said here, I find a single graphics card a better solution, but it's not a bad idea to give the 2nd 7800GT a try if it's cheap and handy.

Don't rush on buying the latest cpu thinking it'll do miracles in games. You might end up with stuff which don't deliver a significant gain in gaming, although a lot faster for other applications.

Whatever you chose, do as much research as you can, read reviews, benchmarks, users' feedback (on newegg for ex.), people's comments etc.

Let me insist that for gaming, an average cpu with a great graphics card will yield A LOT better than an average graphics card with a great cpu. But don't take my word for it, check reviews and benchies.

9600GT over the 9800GTX, 9800GTX and 9800GX2 are rumored to be EOL in a couple months. better yet if your gaming in 1600x resolution or lower purchase the Galaxy 8800GS 384 it's the only 8800GS that uses 0.8ns Samsung Memory, HDMI Port and a nice Cooler Master Heatsink you shouldn't have any problems finding it in the UK. Q6600 is no good for overclocking it's already reached it's potential and is probably unnecessary anyways.

Damn, never gotten a faster respose than that when the person I quoted didn't have any warning I was quoting them.

You got some links, I would like to check that out myself(not saying I don't believe you). This is really gonna suck, freaking $600 for a graphic cards that's gonna be replaced in a acouple months. I thought this thing would stay on top, or atleast close to the top, for a decent amount of time. Damn, how long did the 8800s stay up there?

EOL doesn't mean replaced it's End of Life it just means nVidia will stop taking orders for the card it doesn't mean Stores won't stop selling already stocked ones however this could effect one's Warranty.
