View Full Version : Mosfet Coolers for my Mars Mobo

I plan on removing the stock NB, SB and Mosfet coolers on my motherboard. http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y208/Cali2na/Picture035-1.jpg
So basically all the copper is coming out of this picture. Now I have Thermalright HR-05's for the NB and SB. My problem is I need a Mosfet cooler and the Thermalright HR-09 does not fit, unless I solder it on. Im not comfortable with soldering it to make it fit.
So what is my alternative?

And by the way, the area I am talking about is with the heat pipe that says Cool-Pipe on it. Thanks in advance.

what case is that?

Here's a couple choices;

2 things. Firstly, with the HR-05, it will interfere (ie short out) your graphics card because of how the mounting holes are positions.

Second, the mounting holes for the MOSFETs are not standard either, and I had to use zip ties to hole the HR-09 one (before I found out the HR-05 interferes with the graphics card that is).

To be honest, I've yet to find a set of coolers to replace the cooling on the Mars that doesn't interfere with either the HSF, or the graphics card.

Couldn't you just use thermal adhesive for the mosfet coolers?

That sucks. I have seen a few other ppl with the Mars mobo and have the HR-05 and HR-09 (soldered on) and they have reported no problems on it interfering with the gpu. How do the zip-ties work for you? I mean do they hold it down well?

Like the Arctic Silver adhesive? As in the glue, not the paste? I could but then removing it would be impossbile.

I use the AS epoxy. Removing is not easy (impossible) but I heard someone mention if you mix like 10% of AS 5 with it it becomes removable.

Zip-ties work quite well to be honest. You get a nice firm contact, but the heatsink does move side to side a bit, but it doesn't look great and bends some of the fins.

I've been searching ever since I got this board for a better cooling system, but short of buying everything on the market and trying each one I really don't know what to get.

Also, I've got the HR-05 SLI because my Infinity is over the top of the N/B, so it would interfere.

now that you mention it, i remember hearing that too. thanks MK.

To Darknova:

How exactly does it interfere though? I have the 2x HR-05 SLI too.

It slightly covers the top PCI-E x16 slot.

Cant you just use the lower pcie slot? I might have to do that, but I was trying to avoid it because then I will have to switch the mounting of my HR-03+ and put it on top of the GPU instead of the bottom.

I got one of these, they are really small and would be perfect for the southbridge

and this for the GPU

The bottom is only 4x, not the full 16x, you wouldn't get full performance from your card.

ya i was actually considering getting one of those. but with my TRUE 120 i couldnt fit anything else other than an HR-05 because it covers a lot of the NB. also i was going for an all thermalright theme, lol. or at least all silver. on top of that i already have 2 HR-05's that i plan to use and an HR-09 that i might not be able to use :(

HR-09 is useable, HR-05 is not, and I just got a simple heatsink/fan like mk suggested. The SB doesn't produce anywhere near enough heat to have such a huge cooler.

well lets see what i can come up with. i am going to try to get the HR-09 on and the HR-05 SLI on the NB. i have one for the SB but if it doesnt fit I wont use it. i will check back later as my computer will be off for a few hours. thanks guys for all the help.

And I must say I have had very good luck selling hardware i dont use here at TPU.
(its also a big + supporting the forum by selling/trading with others)

i finally finished installing my new NB, SB and Mosfet coolers. For the HR-05 to fit on the NB i had to adjust the stock mounting position and move it a little to the side and the SB cooler fit on easliy. i had no interference with the gpu and just barely fit in :rockout:.
the Mosfet cooler was another story. i didnt want to use the zip-tie method (thank you for that DarkNova) so i said F*** it. i went ahead and soldered it. it was actually quite easy. i expected it to be a lot worse than it actually was, so i was relieved once i got it mounted. i will post the pics here in a minute. thanks for all who helped.

Nice job, the lower Hr 05 looks silly though. If you want I will trade you the Enzo one for the HR 05 for the SB.

(mine is black, not copper colored. It didnt go with anything as copper)

Very cool job making the 09 mounts.:rockout:
