I need a new proc, I want to run a 24/7 4ghz quad. I can get 4.0 to boot on my q6600 but the volts required are outragous, and the temps follow suit.
I want to get a extreme edition quad, my only question is which one.
I would prefer the 9650, the only issue is price, if I could find one around 700-750, Id probably get it right now!, but I dont think thats gonna happen.
So please, any inputs or results you have gotten on an EE would be appreciated. Also, if you know where there is some good deals let me know! THANKS!
FYI - H2O cooled

qx6700 is not a good aoption at all. expensive, will not hit 4GHZ and will run hotter than you q6600. A q6700 will more than likely hit that for less money. the qx6850 seems a waste at this point. what about a 9450 or 9550?

QX9650 is your only choice in my opinion. The q9450's are not 24/7 4ghz chips. Mabye the 9550's but the 9650 will for sure. Get me one while your at it.:)

if i was to do a 9450 or 9550 wouldnt I just be better off with my q6600?
Im really looking to run a stable 4ghz and bench much higher, like 4.5 or more. I plan to add TEC to my water loop in the near future!

hehe Im really thinking its my only option! I might wait around for a month or so and see if the qx9770 comes down. I remember the 9650 was 1300 when it came out 3 months ago, now its 1000 bucks at the egg, and u can get it on ebay for like 800!
What is the difference in the 9650 and the 9770, the 9770 is just binned higher? handle a little more maybe?

I didnt want this to be the main concern on my choice, but I like to try and push my stuff as high as I can. I will try and push it as far as my mobo and cooling will allow. I really think Im gonna get the 9650, just gotta sell off the stack of old parts....................

minus the whole price aspect! Ill have to part out my server for it, but I think it will be worth it!! Im the only the one that uses my server, and its only to support home media for the house. May as well just plug the raid card in the rampage and do it all from there with a 9650!

OK ??
If I buy a 9650 off ebay how would it work if the proc ever failed(say in less that a year)
Would I have the ability to RMA through Intel?
I guess Im worried, what if I get a bad proc, a poor OCer, ect.
Should I just spend the extra 200 bucks and get it from a known retailer?

the whole thing is a big risk for little extra gain.. i wanted 4 gig 25/7 but its easier for me cos i am happy with a four gig dual.. a 4 gig quad 24/7 is a different kettle of fish.. all the high quad clocks seem to come with a high multiplier and low fsb.. phenom or intel the quads dont seem to like the higher fsb speeds..
i would save the 200 and take the ebay risk.. not doing would just mean way tooo much money for the little extra gain.. the price is gonna drop big time on the chip u are thinking of buying over the next few months..

I have been wonderin if its gonna drop. I looked at the qx6800 6850 and 6700, and those all seem to be around 800-1000 bucks still. So i was wonderin if the 9650 would even come down..... if there is the probability that it is gonna happen, I might just hang on for a few months, I really shouldnt be complaining about 3.7 stable.....

its a semi flagship price.. when intel launch a higher clocked chip which i assume they will the price will drop down to more normal levels.. mind u thats just my take on it.. it depends on whether or not intel feel the need to launch a higher clocked chip.. they aint exactly being pushed.. he he
u should be happy with 3.7 but 4 gig has a certain charm to it.. he he he.. two years ago it was 3 gig amd for me.. now its 4 gig intel.. no real logic to it..

Ok, got a good question for everyone~!
I am gonna run 2 loops of water, one for the video cards, and one for the CPU. Now I have a resovoir that has 2 in and 2 out ports. If I run both pumps/loops through this resevoir will it defeat the point of having 2 loops ??
I want to have the CPU run on a 320mm rad and a 220 rad, then have the Grfx run on their own 320. If I have them both go into the same rez wont that blend the temps and raise the temps?
I do understand that it would equal out, but do you think I would take a hit on the CPU temps?/
thats my main reason for doing it, the grfx cards are putting too much heat into the loop!

I think the hit would be very minor, though if you are picky you may just want to do two res's.

qx9770 has a bus of 1666 while the qx9650 is 1333
does your board support it is the ????.

im pretty sure, I have a rampage formula...... x48 is the newest chipset, am I wrong?
@erocker,
I do have 2 rez so i might just do that, I just didnt want to waste all that space!! But just might have too!!

Q9550 without a doubt if your board can hit the FSB's IMO, there is no definate in any of your choices for 4gig.....24/7 except the QX9650, if you dont wanna pay those prices the Q9550 is the most cost effective route.

I just put my backup rig up for sale here locally, so ill see if any of my customers bite! If they do, qx9650 here you come!! If not, Im just gonna hold off for some time until I find a replacement really worth it. the 9550 is gonna cost >500 anyways, and if im gonna spend that much I may as well go all the way.
Isnt the 9550 only a 8.5 multi? Wouldnt I get similar results with my q6600??

Thats not bad, chances are, if you can get a lower one it should do even better, not in every case but usually.

Oh i c where your going with this, and the new 45nms have a lower VID......
I really want the qx9650, its just a matter of if its worth selling a fast rig for a proc. Im still thinkin yes though

I have a Q6600 with a 1.150V Vid on it's way to me :D usually 65 or 45nm, the lower the Vid, the higher the headroom, there are exceptions to that though, often howevr it;s how the chip reacts to the higher voltage at the top end of overclocking that determines it's max, thats where the 45nm's lose out a little because they by nature are less resistant to high voltages....hence the accelerated degredation thing.

Not really since the New Socket should be out in Q4 by the time you know it its here and all that money you could of saved and get the best with that IMO

Agreed, thats why I am sticking with the Q6600 for the time being, the price of the 9550 is just too much for what you get IMO and with the right 65nm quad I think there is not enough in it.....we will see!

Well that depends, I just got the rampage formula. So i dont plan on getting a new mobo anytime soon.
I really want to get a new mobo then, but it would kind of been a waste of the 300 the rampage costed me!
