What are you looking for in an MMO. It would seem your tastes deviate from the norm a bit, so reccomending you one may be futile.

I can't agree more how much Vanguard sucks, it's beautiful looking but is programmed by trained monkeys. Personally the only MMO of held on to is Guild Wars, it's still a great game and no stupid fees!

If you think LOTRO sucks (and I imagine you might put EQ2 in that list), then I'm afraid you won't find any enjoyable MMO, at least out of the popular or properly supported/maintenanced ones.
Those are the two best all around at this time, based on their depth, support and future-proof capabilities.
If you want something more difficult and technical, then go back to EQ1, if you want something more action packed, wait for Age of Conan.
Sounds to me like you're a bit 'green' when it comes to the MMOs you've named, despite the number you've tried, possibly because you've played those that don't grab you at the start, and keep you interested.
I know that games should capture you from early on, and hold your attention, however the reality is much different, and MMOs are, at least these days, geared towards appealing to the player later on, you know, after you put some time and effort into it.
Maybe you could lower your expectations, and try to see a game through a bit, before saying it 'sucks.'
WoW, EQ, LOTRO etc. do not suck. They have their problems, both communial and technical, however they are fully supported by companies who run 24/7 maintenance. All you've shared is opinion.
However, free games, and cheap games, like Tabula Rasa, Hellgate, Cabal, etcetc. are extremely short of support and often die out fairly quickly. They are very shallow, and use gimmicks and flashy action/visuals to impress off the bat and that is a fact.
You could try Horizons, it's an older MMO now, yet it's still going. It's very ORIGINAL Everquest like.
If you give us more details though, I'll have a think on it.

Dungeons and Dragons Online. It's sort of like a third-person, squad-based shooter. Sort of. Kind of. Definitely has some of the best MMO combat mechanics around. When's the last time anyone in an MMO could backflip out of the reach of a giant swinging a club at you or manually dodge a fireball? And the quests feel like actual quests, none of that "go fetch me 20 buzzard wings and then come back so I can then give you your next quest of fetching me 20 buzzard claws" stuff.
Has built-in voicechat. You don't have to talk, but most people will expect you to have it on so you can hear them if they want to talk instead of type. Watch some PVP DDO videos on youtube if you want to see some of the combat action. PVP is limited to certain areas, but the PVP videos often show how freely you can fight better than the group questing videos do..
And if you hit 4th or 5th level, you could run the Delera's Tomb quest line in the graveyard, narrated by the late and all-powerful Gary Gygax.

Thats an important question, I've invested too much time into both FFXI and WoW. I like them for very different reasons, WoW is simplistic and fun in an easy way and its a nice change from FFXI. FFXI requires a lot of hardwork and time to see any results, FFXI has the best community in any MMO since the game almost requires teamwork. There are almost no childish people in FFXI, well there are but those people tend to quit because they find the game isn't for them. I've had 4 characters in FFXI and a bunch in WoW.
Its a cycle I usually go through, I play WoW for half a year and eventually get sick of it because its rather meaningless. I mean all these games are meaningless but WoW has no sense of accomplishment at all. Thats when I take up FFXI, it takes a lot of hard work but you do feel good about something you've got done for your character. Eventually I find I invested too much time in FFXI and need my dose of real life, and I quit that for awhile. Then back to WoW, then FFXI, then life.

Vanguard is a great game I dont know why you think it sucks. just requires a lot of processing power as well as an x-fi sound card. freaking awesoem gameplay.
as for DDO, its a great game as well..I just hope you dont mind carrying around 50 different types of weapons/armor because you'll have to switch them out all the time. Oh, and if you mess up during character creation with your stats or take a wrong level of a class you're pretty much stuck to re-roll your character. no fix around that. oh, and buffs last 1 minute-10 minutes if you're lucky...so be prepared to cast a lot on your team mates.
outside of those things, its pretty much a perfect game though. great strategic elements to it (especially if you're a wizard)- you may be confused at first but people will help you out and let you know what to do/how not to die.

Minus the suck.
Add gore. Modern graphics. Established story and IP. A development team that truly loves the work they do. over 600k signed up for the beta, estimated 4 million players at launch.
Yeah, call it WoW2 if ya want. It's an MMO after all.

I guess. Isn't WoW pretty much the standard definition of an MMO? 11 million people like it. They did something right. I'm not here to knock it really. I've played, got a couple characters into the mid-40's.
If you want to look at similarities, a LOT of "MMO's" are WoW clones. That's just what the MMO genre has turned into.
If you understand this, and start to look at the differences, well, there's a whole bunch of things that are changed. I see no reason in comparing new games to WoW. They followed the rules, and built a solid MMO on every level. I say solid, not excellent. Things are never going to change until the differences in MMO's start to catch hold and start somewhere.
Do you WAN to play WoW for the rest of your days? Or is it OK that there MIGHT be something out there, different in many ways, and hopefully better than the established. Pessimism is just going to leave you disappointed no matter how you look at things. It will never be good enough for you. Take hold of this new game coming out in the light of the differences. Take comfort in the similarities. Why shoot it down?

Weapon carrying got a bit less when they introduced Transmutation weapons that automatically bypass whatever Damage Reduction you are trying to bypass. Definitely need the right tool for the job at higher levels, though.
Wasn't sure how much I was spinning my wheels by even mentioning it since most people say they want something different but then don't give the 10-day free trial a chance anyway, but if someone wants their first character to stay out of trouble, just make something like a human or dwarf barbarian and use a two-handed weapon and max strength and con and take Power Attack. When people see your character, they'll know what you're about and won't expect much from you other than that when you start swinging things around you die really fast.
Of note is that Turbine makes both DDO and LoTRO (WoW in Middle-Earth), and generally on the forums you'll see that a person who loves one doesn't play the other very long. DDO really is something different.
I got fed up with WoW when they kept "rebalancing" my characters every other week. It's like they throw darts at a wall and see what sticks.
Knew a guy on DDO who was in the Conan beta. He said it was all PVP and couldn't stand it. DDO is mostly about team play, or at least duo play. I have some hope for Conan, but Warhammer really does look like a WoW clone, and I think most people getting their hopes up for it not being the same thing with a different coat of paint are going to be disappointed. Who knows till it's released, though.
Heard some good things about Vanguard after Sony took it over.
