Hi,
It hasnt taken long but my Northbridge/Chipset Fan is the noisiest fan in my whole system, its so irritating, right in my ear, lol!
Anyway I don't have enough money to buy a new cooler, budget of only £5 :( (was going to get the Zalman Flower, but unsure as to thermal ability and hook orientation).
So I thought I would just replace the fan, this is the one I'm going to get

Xilence Fan

I'm just going to use the fan, should look pretty nice with the red PCB

Just got this one too
Verax A1:

Its a 65mm silent fan for 40mm heatsinks, anti-vibration fitting, automatic temperature controller rpm.
Being a 65mm high performance Ball Bearing fan it should bring my Nb temps down lower than they r now right?

ATM I have a very noisy 7000rpm fan 40x40x10mm
I need the new fan to perform as well, if not better than stock.

Now I'm gonna have a noisy fan (stock), a pretty fan (Xilence), and a powerful fan (Verax) to choose from, lol!

i want to take the Nb heatsink off of this mobo to reapply the thermal paste:

Does anyone have any tips for getting it off without breaking anything??

Cheers.

i take my board out of the PC place it on the anti-static wrap on a table-top then with a pair of needle nose pliers i carefully push the retaining clip (on the inside part of the loop) down and out (in) from the loop

works for me every time ;) never broke a hoop yet

Just unhook the little wires from the HSF on both sides, and pry it very gentle upward, most likely there will be some adhesive pad, but it's not that strong.

It was the unhooking part I was struggling with, lol! Just wanted to find out if I was doing something wrong before I applied to much pressure.

Don't worry, the pressure generated by that wire clip it's only enough to hold the HSF in place, it's unlikely to damage the NB chip. :toast:

Let me know what you think. I might try and fit the Xilence fan on my SB, its pretty hot, Just depends on how much room there is between the SB and my 3870.
