Microsoft is now backing off comments by chairman Bill Gates that the next version of Windows could be available as early as next year. "We are currently in the planning stages for Windows 7 and development is scoped to three years from Windows Vista consumer" general availability, a Microsoft spokesman said in an e-mail Friday to InformationWeek (http://www.informationweek.com/news/windows/operatingsystems/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=207100040). Windows Vista was released to consumers in late January 2007. That means Windows 7 would not be released until January 2010, regardless of the fact that Bill Gates told Windows 7 may be released "sometime in the next year [2009] or so". Microsoft said Gates may have been referring to trial versions of Windows 7. "As is standard with the release of a new product, we will be releasing early builds of Windows 7 prior to its general availability as a means to gain tester feedback," the spokesman said. "We're not sharing additional information at this time," the spokesman added.

So, to clarify, and to make sure I interpret this correctly:
WIN 7 beta - 2009
WIN 7 RC - 2010
WIN 7 alpha - 2010.5
WIN 7 alpha SP1 - 2011
WIN 7 alpha SP2 -2011
WIN 7 alpha SP3 -2011.5
WIN 7 beta 2.1 - 2011.75
WIN 7 alpha 2 - 2012
sound about right? :p

I don't get it. Perhaps I am still naive, but when the chairman of a huge company releases a statement, I don't expect it to be taken back just a couple of days later. Was this some kind of marketing subliminal priming or something? Crap.

Its just too funny, not to say that I took that announcement with a grain of salt, well maybe I took it with 2 or 3 grains considering all of the painful longhorn releases that turned up b4 vista graced our DVD drives.

Bill Gates has one foot out the door already what with only few months left until July when he steps down. So he probably doesn't even have the whole picture anymore. Or possibly he wanted to prop up MS stock prices since they took a beating after the Yahoo announcement.
Either way, neither 2009 no 2010 seems realistic if history is something to go by..

Come on people... There has never been a piece of software in the history of Earth that has actually released on time. Give MS a break.

The sensationalism is amazing. Here read the quote:
We are currently in the planning stages for Windows 7 and development is scoped to three years from Windows Vista consumer"
This is not an indication of a product release time. As a matter of fact it only explains the development scope for windows 7 and it's interpreted as tentative not a definite. This does not mean a release date of 2010. :p

Sounds about right. Guess they must have heard some backlash on the quick release, much like some of the comments made on here.

This is how it was to begin with. People decided to make a story where there wasn't one.
