I plan on formatting my HD soon, and have a lot of saved game files. I was wondering how I would transfer them to another drive I have and still get them to work. The last time I tried to do this, I copied the files but when I re-installed the games and put the files in to a save folder, it didnt show up in game.

Thanks

It depends on the game.

The main thing that goes wrong, is that people don't replace the files into the apporpriate location on your root or C:. I.e. some games use the My Games folder, others reside in My Documents, others use their own folder within the games root/install location.

For 99% of games, if you adhere to one of the above considerations(and possibly other miscellaneous locations), and/or you know where to place the saved data, then you shouldn't have a problem.

Moving them to a separate drive is nothing more than probably what you did before, which was a copy or cut and paste job.

However, keep in mind, some games and applications will not read or recognize data, like saved game files if they've been reinstalled. This is most likely a registry tie or coding issue, and unless you can give us a specific game where this incident is taking place, then your only solution may be to start the game(s) from the beginning.

Gears of war is a pain to restart. I finally had to download a trainer :)

Just copy the whole Steam folder across to the other drive, and then once everything is reinstalled, run Steam, create shortcuts, and you're done, no faffing about with reinstalling Steam and games, and copying saves, I've got my Steam folder on drive D: and it's safe from any reinstalls and formats I do, and I've even copied it across to other PCs for safe-keeping and playing when my machine is down.
Crysis, as far as I know, saves the save game files in your Documents folder. As long as your My Documents folder is the same every time, it should detect it.
Test Drive Unlimited is not going to give you any trouble, the folder with the same game files is in your Documents folder with the useful name "Test Drive Unlimited". If you ever need to use the saves in other places, just copy the folder into the My Documents folder.

And can I move saved game Crysis from Vista to XP and proceed with the game, because I have dual boot OS, and I played Crysis in Vista, but now I want to play in XP environment, because i have some problems in vista.
