View Full Version : Installing a PSU upsidedown?
Just wanted to make sure it's ok, i beleive that i've seen people do it but i want to know for certain if it's OK? My PSU bay is on the bottom, while the the PSU i'm want to put in, the Ultra X3 is meant to go on the top with the fan facing down. I want to have it with the fan facing up at the bottom of the case.

you can install it any way up you want, as long as all of the fans are getting air... thats the most important thing...
Well, there is another way, my case the TJ-09 has a grill at bottom of the PSU bay,it is not very big, prolly not big enough for the 135mm fan, but i can put the PSU facing that grille. But i would prefer to have the fan facing up, it looks better that way. So is it safe, will it impact performance in any way?
Edit: thanx twicksisted, looks like we posted at the same time.

PSUs can be mounted any way around that you like. With the TJ-09, if you can mount it at the bottom of the case, I'd suggest it. A lot of cases do that now. The PSU used to be the exhaust fan in ATX designs, but now, it heats up quite a lot on average, and you don't want it pulling air that's already hot, from the CPU, so mounting it at the bottom, especially if the intake fan for the PSU points out of the case, means it gets its own supply of air, and should keep its heat seperated from the rest of the computer. At least, that's the theory behind the Cosmos, the P180/182/190, and an awful lot of other cases I can't think of now.
Yea, i don't think that should be an issue, the inside my case is very cool so if i have the PSU fan intaking case air it would be taking in slighly above room temp air. I have a thermal probe on the PSU and i'm going to monitor it's temps and if it starts getting warm (warmer than my current PSU) i'll flip it over and try to have it intake air from the bottom through that grill. I have the case sitting on a desk and the distance between it and the grill is about an inch or a little less, you think that should be enough for sufficent air intake?

Might I just add this...Having the Antec 900 case I put a hole in the bottom sfter running it upside down for a bit. Thats not the point really, when I flipped it back the dust flopped onto some connections and blew up my PSU. Point being, I say blow it clean really well b4 you flip it or power it back up!
