I went to do my windows updates since I just installed office last night and low-and-behold there is a driver update for my 3870 which states it was released yesterday. I'm not going to try it but just thought that was pretty interesting.

Dont get 8.3, if you already have it DO NOT get the hot fix for 8.3 it did nothin but bad for me.. AA wouldnt turn on games ran like crap.. it was a mess. I think 8.4 should come out in May. 8.3 came out in April right?

Actually, 8.3 came in March. They name their versions as 8, as in year, and 3, as in month. 8.4 should be coming soon ...

The 8.3 Hotfix came up as Cat 8.4. So I'm assuming they were the 8.4 betas. And yeah like HTC said, first digit is the year, second is the month. Drivers are usually released around the middle of the month, so shouldnt be too long now.

Correct. Ofc, sometimes there are hotfixes that can be made available in between cat versions, like the one you mentioned.
Personally, and unless it would be fixing a major issue, i would wait for the next cat version.

That is the cat 8.3 hotfix. Which shows up as cat 8.4. I think it is the beta tho, cus it is not whql.

I am using the 8.4 betas and they work OK, but I still get BSOD or hard locks, last night while using Google Earth. But it gained me a hundred points in 3D06 and made EP2 more stable when using the flashlight.

For people using 8.3's in XP - stick with 8.2. However 8.3 seems to run quite well in Vista.

The "hotfix" with a clean install made all of my DX10 games crash.

I've also heard that new drivers are coming out either middle or late net week.

I have personally tried it several times, with and without crossfire and he is correct. In XP use 8.2's and in Vista use the 8.3's and/of hotfix if you like. I have not heard anything from AMD about new drivers being released.

Lol, forgot to edit his quote, Want to know where people are getting the info about new drivers next week. They just say it with no source. I know amd often releases their drivers around the middle of the month. but saying I heard... . i just wanted to know where they heard it from.

So far it seems, as soon as the next month approaches, the driver hungry goonies start hyping it up and soon enough they get released :) If it works I say keep the cycle going...

First of all, the Hotfix Drivers are meant to be installed by themselves, not ontop of another driver, basically means you install the hotfix driver and the individual CCC. Read the notes on what they fix- they are primarily for AGP cards.

I figured this out on the Cat 8.1- I installed the Hotfix ontop of the Regular 8.1 and i was having some messed up performance Problems, i removed it all and installed the 8.1 Hotfix with the CCC for 8.1s and no problems- games run smooth.

i have read somewhere that this hotfix is only for HD2xxx and it fixes some issues with 3d stuff. i have 2600xt ddr4, and with every new driver it gets so much better.
when the crysis came out it didnt worked at all with 7.10 drivers, but now its flying.

I'm not sure about these, but as I'm at work I can't test them but apparently they're the 8.4 beta set.

The do appear to be, that 8.3 Hotfix, that is apparently meant to be an 8.4 beta is a much smaller file than these. I'll give these a try when I get home from work later today.

Well, they didn't seem to do me any favours. My 3DMark06 score dropped dramatically from 5296 to 5082. :(

Plus my frame rates in CoD 4 are choppier than they were 8.3 - crapass!

i think we need to say whether or not we are useing XP or vista just to make sure we are talking about the same driver set..

the XP ones dont work for me.. 2005 instantly crashed and i am back to the splotchy colour blocks the same as with the 8.3s in crossfire crysis.. i never tried anything else just when back to the 8.2s.. everything after the 8.2s seem downhill for me..

warning do not install ontop of the 8.4 or other drivers as this will degrade performance, install by itself with the stand alone 8.4 CCC app and you should be good to go.
