I've been playing Oblivian for about a year now on the comp in my sys specs with out any problems. Lately I have been given a used Dell XPS Gen 3. It has the Pentium 4 EE cpu (3.4 GHz, 800 fsb), and what ever Dell put in it for a mobo, with a i925x chipset. The vid card is still the original ATI X800 XT. I've add 2 gig of Corsair ddr2 pc6400 (mobo only reads 533 MHz). I have a fresh Win XP Pro x32 sp2 loaded onto a 320gig Saegate SATA hdd.

The problem I am having is the Dell will hang up when the game tryes to (often but not always) "auto save". When it does, it will either freeze the screen, or just go black. The only way to get it to do anything past this is to shut it down and restart it with the power button. It will also do the same thing if you try to load an "auto save", but has no problem with a manual, or "quick" save. I've tryed to uninstall reinstall the game, but still it will lock up the Dell in this way during game play.

Both comps are identical in what's loaded for software. (the docs an settings were also brought over from my sys spec comp). I play with the virus protection (Prevx 2) turned off.

Any idias as to what may be causing this?

Yes I know it's a Dell, though that is the the answer I'm looking for as the prob.

Did you try to start a new game rather than using your save game?

The autosaves and quicksaves of Oblivion have a habit of corrupting, because it's always the same file getting over-written. In fact it is suggested that you do not use them but use only the manual save. That's what I do.

Try following some of the sugestions in the thread I started a while back (click the link in my sig) My issues were a little different, but the advice there may prove helpful to you... I didn't for me, so I gave up on Oblivion unitl I get a new PC...

You know what, this has been happening to me as well lately, and now that you mention it, it been happening whenever the game auto saves? I just assumed it was my clocks, but if I can run Crysis Very High for hours on end without a crash why can't I Oblivion?

What version do you have?

I've got a version 1.1.425 Game of the year addition. (Oblivion, Nights of the Nine, and Shivering Isles on one disc)
I haven't installed any updates.

I'm starting to lean twads a vid card issue for my case.

I've noticed that the gpu cooling fan will not run a constant speed but change from all on to an idle and back again. At the same time the game crashes on auto save, the fan has dropped to an idle and not picked up speed again. When it doesn't drop rpm on an auto save, it doesn't crash.:wtf::confused:

Is it posible to be the fan, and the gpu is just over heating? or Am I grabbing at the wrong staws???

Did you ever edit the Oblivion.ini file?

No I haven't. I know very little on my own of how to edit games.
I do well If given instuctions of how to do something. But for the most part I am limited to just installing and playing as is.

With everything I've read on the troubleshooting threads with Oblivion crashing/corrupting autosaves is a known issue. Turn them off in the ini file & also in the menu. Not only is this a recommended process but it saves you the hassle. If you do this also make sure you keep @ least 3 running save files hard saved in case you need them or one of those corrupts....which seems to happen alot to some people. Myself I've never had this issue..but have turned of my autosaves just to avoid it when it happens. Oblivion is a beast when it comes to little annoying problems popping up and smacking you in the face.
