Why isnt there any thanks button in the forum? A few members have been helpfull to me in the P.M's but then there is no thanks button there. It will definately be usefull.

prolly because to many people would be thanking eachother for the fun of it, in the forum you can see who got thanked and what for

^ what he said. it'd make the thanks pointless, as people would privately abuse it.

Guess so. There's not really much I can do to help the guys who helped me atm.

You don't 'thank' people in a PM because:

A PM is a personal conversation between you and another member. Where as, everyone can read your conversation in an open forum thread. By thanking a post in a thread, you are telling others that the post you thanked is useful to the thread topic. By thanking someone in a PM, only Ceiling Cat knows what happened. So it's pointless thanking a PM. I just received a PM from a member thanking me for my time, and that's more than enough for me, I don't crave for a high thanks count.

Attempt a manual thanks. Manual thanks are difficult since they require the use of five buttons instead of just one. However, their meaning is not lost, and perhaps even amplified, by the extra effort involved.

Example of Manual Thanks

Your advice with this problem has been really helpful (INSERT USER NAME HERE.)

*In this instance "thanks" has been made bold for clarification of what a manual thanks is; manual thanks do not need to be made bold, although they can be.

... plus if the solution or information that you received might be of help to others... please post it with your manual thanks!. There's no point keeping useful information private in PMs and away from the TPU community. Who knows who else it might help. That's what we are all here for: a bit of give and take. If its good, share it!

Sometimes you might want to contact a member in particular privately and request his/her attention without starting a thread which will get lost in a matter of hours.

"Can I run a X-Fi Sound Card on a PCI-X 100MHz slot?"
^Do I expect quick replies to that? Maybe not...my thread will be buried in a matter of minutes by all those "OMG look at this LOL" or "I got a new dog h4x" threads in the "New Posts" list. So, what do I attempt? PM DanTheBanjoman who has a high understanding of server/workstation architecture, at least I get content he will reply at his leisure. Same way, I keep getting PM's from several members seeking sound-card help...but their cards not being SB X-Fi, needn't start new threads, and I make it a point to reply to them.

it certainly would be a nice feature, but the only problem is that people will abuse that feature to raise their thanks count :ohwell:

the thanks button is all about giving credit to the person.. everyone has a thanks count.. and people can see how much a person has been thanked and their posts per thanks ratio. lets say you help me, i would hit the thanks button to credit you for helping me.. and it adds a thanks to your thanks count.. and this shows how helpful you are etc.

Well thanks doesn't actually count how helpful you are. It really means appreciating your post/comment. Some people have helped a lot of people but he never actually have time to click the thanks button.

Haha, just another instance of how lazy the internet has made us. I don't wanna spell it out, can't I just press a button.....

I don't think it is about laziness, just another means in the pursuit of more "points." It is a psychological need, it brings about feelings of success. It is why so many people like to get all the "achievements" in games they, feel rewarded. Games like WoW prey on these feelings to a high degree.

^Now that's what Private Messaging and General Nonsense are in place for.

I do come across members with high thanks count but funny enough to know, most of their 'thanks' come from "wow that's great man!" or "Oh I feel bad for ya man"....what's new is that I'm now getting to see some of that in 'Comments & Feedback' forum.
