AMD: Next CPU architecture will be completely different
New architecture promises to be completely different from Phenom, and capable of brand new features

AMD has squeezed an awful lot out of its AMD64 architecture since it first materialised in 2003, and even the latest K10 core used in the Phenom chips uses basically the same architecture with a different cache system. However, the company says that it’s now looking at a whole new architecture for the next generation of CPUs.
AMD’s technical director of sales and marketing for EMEA, Giuseppe Amato, told Custom PC that ‘if I look at the next generation architecture of our CPU, then it will definitely not be, how can I say, comparable with the Phenom. It will look completely different.’ Amato was unable to give us any specific details of the new architecture, but did add that it would ‘solve problems that today we think can never be addressed by hardware.’
The AMD64 architecture introduced us to new features such as 64-bit desktop computing, as well as the integrated memory controller. It gave Intel’s NetBurst architecture a good for its money too, consistently out-performing Pentium 4 chips in our benchmarks. However, the new AMD64-based Phenom chips are unable to compete with Intel’s new Core 2 Quad chips at the top end of the market, with AMD positioning even the top-end Phenom chips at a similar price to Intel’s Core 2 Quad Q6600.
Intel also decided to go back to the drawing board in terms of its CPU architecture when it went from NetBurst to Core, which was interestingly more like Intel’s ancient P6 Pentium Pro core than a Pentium 4 chip. What would you like to see in a new CPU architecture from AMD? And what sort of problems could be solved by the architecture that ‘we think can never be addressed by hardware?’ Let us know your thoughts.

hmmm interesting, hope they start thinking about there Fusion processors, they seem intriguing

Good, they need to, especially w/ intel upping the ante w/ nahalem. Hope the hypothesized cpu war is as competitive as some think........

AMD has to be able to compete with Nehalem by mid-09 otherwise they are in a world of hurt.
Strategically the vast majority of the processor market is medium-low end CPU's but if you loose the Enthusiast crowd, you loose a great deal of social clout.

True but Intel allready got plans for Nehalem to upgrade it to next level
i hope amd can make somthing faster then core2 so it wil be a good battle and good prices
may the best architecure win!

Yeah sandy bridge in 2010 on the 32nm front. At least AMD has the advantage of knowing what their competitor is generally doing as far as releases and basic tech goes. That should give them at least the deadline.
Come on AMD we need something more than L3 cache and a beefed up hypertransport to combat Intel. Let's have it!

Finally somebody woke up at AMD. Good to hear they are working on it. It better be damn good otherwise we will see them gone for ever.

I don't want them to kick intel's arse, I want them to be so neck and neck that they have to keep dropping prices to keep the advantage. Close fight benefits us, blowout of any kind and we're screwed.

Who doesn't love a good bloodbath :toast: What I don't want to see from AMD is another batch of watered down BS that can't OC or junk that can't be taken out of the socket w/o pins bending all over the place
'Bout damn time too. If I remember correctly, amd64 is an upgrade to athlon xp architecture. Hope AMD nails Intel with the best bang/$ ratio. :toast:

Cool news. I wonder if this means AM3 is coming soon? It's very nice to see AMD making big changes. I hope they all pay off. Good luck AMD:toast:.

yeah but everyone said that about hyperthreading and dual cores as well... and a few about hardware 3D graphics... and pixel shaders... and everything.
More or less, it comes down to the people with the money pushing things - if intel and AMD really push for multi core chips, then apps and games will use them more. People will flock to products that work better on that 64 core thingymajig they just bought, because the box says it works best on that.

personally as much as id like to hope that AMD manages to pull this off - I dont think that their gonna be able to do it. judging by their rather poor performance so far. its hard to believe that they can really bring something to the table that competes directly with Intel. unless AMD have gatherd all its remaning funds & assets (morgages & other propertys of value also accepted) & are planning to use it as colateral in a last ditch attempt to woo the masses when Intel are being more agressive then dividing by zero both in the marketing & development arenas - I cant see how AMD can possibly say that they got something good up their sleeves - if they did then why wait until the brink of collapse before they unveil it? im sure that project has been hounded & sufferd many setbacks due to they many issues AMD have been trying to drag themselves through.
I really hope it works for them but im not willing to wait until they release their 'holy grail' of processors.
my $2 on the matter - flame & bash me if you must but these are just my personal opinions & views.
good luck to AMD

We are talking about Bulldozer.
Too bad AMD pushed it back a year or two back in late 07... :(
All we'll see in 2009 is a K10 based "watered-down Fusion" called Swift (45nm K10 + iGPU + iPCIe ctrl). Originally Fusion was supposed to feature a cluster of Bulldozer cores and it was scheduled for 2009. Hopefully they change the name with the architecture. I'll never put anything in my PC with a name like "phenom". That's about as bad as putting something in your PC with the name "Fatal1ty" on it.

I completely agree here. Why would anyone want domination by one company or the other? Only real competition leads to prices that benefit consumers. Please think about why you would want one company to prevail, then take a minute and think if your reasoning makes any sense at all.

I just switched it two days ago from the Firefox vs IE logo. Means nothing so I don't see your point.
