When I open an image in Windows Photo Gallery, it for some wierd reason, adds a horrible red tint to the image. Although it's hard to see in normal images, it really stands out in black + white ones:

Have I inadvertently changed a hidden "make all pics look like sh*t" option or does Vista do this by default?
Any ideas?

I had the same issue only it was a green tint. I couldnt figure it out until I reverted the color calibration back to Vista default. It has to do with the color profile to your monitor. Best way to fix it is do a restore point. If not your in for a mission.

Press Fix -> Adjust Color -> turn down Color temperature to half of slider. Or press Ctrl + R

Just for fun I thought I would see how ba it gets after a few cycles of opening the image, printing screen in photo gallery, pasting into paint.
Here's how it turned out lol it's turned it completely yellow:

i had this wicked easy fix..
go to personalization thna to your monito settings(bare with me im not on vista atm) go to advanced and the color tab their you should see the color profile in use it will probably have the name iof your monitor as its name delete this and it should be fixed. (you may need to reboot) now that this is done and its fixed watch your windows updates as it will try to redownload the color profile and apply it just hide the update and it will be fine.
the problem comes from the profile that wiondows reads makes the OS display certain color temps etc...while the monitor has its own built in (ususally with lcd monitors you have diff programmed profiles to choose from like ?"gaming" movie" etc.) this forces the colors to be off
