View Full Version : What does the 9800GX2 really look like?

I looked for images in google but all I got were pictures with the cooler ON, game screenshots, benchmarks, and one where it was two gpus and one pcb. What's real?

Next time do some stricter searches like 9800GX2 fanless something like that.

That's a GPU SANDWICH? So it lines up like THIS? The red parts being the GPU?

Daaamn. Everytime I see GX2 stripped I can't think of anything else but how this is the most idiotic circuit board ever seen in the history of video cards.

hat,
Yup. The GPUs face each other with a double sided HSF stacked between them.

Wow. That is epic fail. Who designed this? Why would Nvidia even think of rolling this out of the gate with such a retarded cooling design?

it might seem odd, but in a way it works. with a blower at the back exhausting out the 'front' (near the DVI plugs) of the card, it would have a natural wind tunnel.

Of course, thats a nightmare if you want a 3rd party cooler.

and the price you have to pay for a water block as you cant use the single ones on it

im thinking thats why they made it like that to make money EVGA

Contrary to that, I think it's a far more effective cooler (and construction) than 7950 GX2 because the components of both PCB's are cooled almost equally, against the 7950 GX2 where the GPU below is left to toast and in the HD3870 X2 where GPU 0 (the one closest to the DVI ports) has a heatsink that receives air pre-heated by GPU 1 and the lane arbiter chip (ofcouse this is compensated by GPU 0 having a superior copper heatsink that's suposed to desipate better). But the general construction of the PCB is such, that even in fluid-blocks, the fluid is heated by one GPU and that hot fluid flows over the other GPU, whereas in blocks designed for the 9800 GX2, there's a common chamber over/under the parts of the block that come in contact with the GPU dies from which fluid flows so there's slightly higher uniformity with heat transfer there.

Just as a fact guys, even thought it looks idiotic, it actually works well. Temps are in the 70s. Compare this to TWO 8800GTs, with reference cooling @ ref speeds. The thing is they run MUCH warmer, in the 80s and with the case of the OC editions, nearing the 90s.

This is one good point of the 9800GX2 that is not to be dismissed. However I would really question why its going EOL so quickly.

Have you ever thought that a 7950GX2 style dual PCB, or a HD3870X2 style PCB would be too large/difficult to design for a G92? One thing I have to praise is how they made each of the cards on the 9800 have four phases (just like a 8800GTS 512MB) instead of the 8800GT's reference's 3 phases.

Why do you guys even complain anyway...? This product has a high end niche. So what if EVGA releases some waterblock for excessive prices. People who buy a 9800GX2 logically will be financially able enough to:

1. Afford a second one
2. Afford the water block + fully fledged LCS.

I wouldn't call solid FPS on Crysis at "Very High" in 1600x1200 an epic fail......:wtf:

When the 9800GX2 is OC'ed and your Quad Core is OC'ed with tons of RAM you get 30+fps at 1920x1200 "very high" in X64 Vista I have seen first hand. But AA still cannot be enabled sadly.:ohwell:

No other single card can do this short of TEC/phase cooling a 3870X2.

Crysis is not "supposed" to be run with AA simply because of the complexity of the vegetation as it would require such an insane transparency multisampling (which it doesn't support, btw) power that no card could deliver it for atleast a year or so. Built-in edge-AA works like a charm and definitely looks better than any AA level (because no transparency AA in Crysis).

and EOL cuz the 99XX are coming out duh :slap:

so do act like you know everything

ppl where paying about the same for cards not to long ago if your a gamer you'll find a way, but idk about that block on top of the card price :p

I'm gonna love my 9800GX2's in SLI with a nice LCS when I build the rig in august.

Forget about GX2. Heat and AA sucks with that card. Wait until July for the massive 4870X2 and kick nvidias ass.

come on people, we all know very well that soon after the 48xx series arrives, its going to have its ass handed to it by nvidia's next gen. it is ATi's destiny.

Fanboy much? We don't even have solid specs on those cards yet.:shadedshu

They could be a weak upgrade to 3870 core for all we know.

And same for Nvidia..... we don't have the real specs out yet.

just dont excpect a mircile on AMD's part even when Nvidia was at its worst it wasnt as bad as AMD is now

I wasnt aware AMD is at its worst? 3870X2 beats all other Nvidia cards except the 9800x2 and that one costs 200$ more.

Thats because its the fastest graphics card on the planet and after rebates its only usually $500 on newegg last time I checked. Remember the 8800ultra?
