jsut upgraded a freinds motherboard and CPU

his old CPU was a AMD 3400+
and his new one is a AMD 6000+

the problem is now with the upgrade he's getting mass lag if he attempted to play a game.

like it lags every couple of seconds for a few seconds. any ideas on what could be causeing this?

what are his other specs?

Skrabrug

1gb of corsair ram
8800GT
M2n-MX SE
580w PSU
120GB

he would have 2gb of ram but the other stick died.

also we just discovered his graphics card is heating up really to the point it looks like a black mark is forming on the card but it goes away once it cools down?

edit: everything is at stock and not O/C

hmm well i would say that lag could be coming from the GT any idea on how hot its getting like what the core temps are?

and ive never heard of a card doing that...is it possible to take pictures?

I would say the LAG would be coming form that single stick of RAM...

very possible...what games is he trying to play and at what settings?

edit: what os is it?

+1 on that

single CH is a little different from dual CH (reduced bandwith)

if its XP and his old chip was a single core, he may need to download the AMD dual core optimiser.

he might need to update the bios on the board maybe, if not its probably the graphics, overheating, ive taken one stick out before and i didnt experiance any lag, but that was me.

Lagging every few seconds? Defrag much? Something must be running at the same time for something like this to happen. I doubt its a hardware based issue. Torrenting/P2P does this FYI (when they are active that is).

Then again 1GB of RAM.... isn't ideal.

Windows XP pro
games he's attempting to play CoD4 all settings maxed (but it ran better on his single core)
medal of honor airborne as well it was lagging badly in single player
assassins creed is the only other game he's tested too.

the thing is I'm pretty sure its the video card seeing as the games don't lag at all once the PC has been switched back on after being off for about an hour and then the mass lag gradually builds up as the graphics card starts to turn black/heat up. (it also heats up to the point you can't touch the card after its mass lagging because it burns)

at first we thought it was a shadow... but its not...

1 gig of ram not good enough for those games...also try defraging like TK said and try that dual core optimizer from AMD found here (http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/TechnicalResources/0,,30_182_871_9706,00.html)

slowdowns after a while do sound like a heat issue. use some programs like GPU-Z to check temps of the card.

1GB of ram is definately not enough to max those games out, by the way.

Bad contact between the GPU and the heatsink?

Skrabrug

we shall get the other gig of ram replaced and get back to this

Mussels

check the GPU card temps first. no use waiting if the card gets killed in the meantime.

Skrabrug
05-04-2008, 08:14 AM
the temps are pretty high
GPU temp = 52*C
PCD temp = 49.8*C
fanspeed has been upped from 30% to 50%

hat
05-04-2008, 08:23 AM
what's the load temp?

Skrabrug
05-04-2008, 08:29 AM
what's the load temp?

he thinks its 25-30 or something.

the temps his card is meant to be running at are

GPU temp: 47.5*C
PCB temp: 42.5*C

(my fan speed is at 30%.. we have the same card)

30c load on a video card would be fantastic but it's not happening
at least not on an air cooler that's not in the extreme north or extreme south

Mussels

make the guy run ATI tool stress test, and tell us the temps then.

you may want to slap a fan there - keep the air flow going & your components cool.

Especially that 8800, with the crappy shitty tooless where the 8800GT usually exhausts it heat through the sidevents, I'd grab a 80mm fan to suck the air up, prefably one with high RPM that is a bit on the more audible side. (2500RPM ish).

I agree, PCB does not discolour in that fashion and usually it would be permanent damage. Adding a 80mm exhaust is a good idea... (or even a new case)

maybe try and reseat the HSF with some fresh TIM on the GFX?

Id say its the ram could possibly be the psu struggling under load?

Ok.. I was looking at the picture, I'm however not sure.. But doesn't the 8800GT have the "exhaust" so it blows air OUT of the system? I can't really see how it looks directly 'under' the card, but that slot should not have a plate there (if there is), otherwise the hot air goes back into the case...

And I have to agree with some of the others, have atleast 1 extra fan to remove the hot air produced inside the case.

<edit>Sorry forgot to mention, when memory is in Dual Channel it can make a big difference in performance. I have noticed this in many games on my new rig (done some "experiments" of my own..)

Its the stick, IMO cuz you had 2 gb before when you had the older cpu. Then you took out one stick, now its the new cpu.

now has 2gb of ram still same issue.
added extra 120mm fan to the back of the PC via removing the extra PCI slot covers and sitting it in there... same issue
even kept the side of the case off and stuck a bloody desk fan over it... same issue

its not a shadow as i said before... also shadows don't slowly appear over objects as they are put under strain in game ;)

no the galaxy 8800GT doesn't have an extra slot for vent space its a single slot card:

get the dual core optimizer and run a windows update when i switched from a x2 b3600 ot a x2BE 6400 it said i needed to update the amd drivers...and get that dual core optimizer in their!

@ Solaris17: already attempted that lol xD

ok after running a few diagnostic tests and so on we have narrowed the problem down to the graphics card.. its heating up massively for unknown reasons. to fix it he shall be buying some cooling gear for it.
