hey, i have a question .. i have a 8600GTS and im overclocking a fair amount .. i overclocked and i ran ati tool for atrifacts or whatever you call it and it keep saying no error but i get some tiny little yellow bots on the box after about 3 mins does this mean its atrifacting and i should lower the clocks?

Indeed! Keep lowering those clocks untill you are artifact free.:)

ok no worries im at 767/1092/1670 from 675/1008/1450 all i had to do it lower my mem clock from 1028 to 1092 to stop artifacting

im getting no yellow dots.. do you think thats a good overclock?or should i overclock somethings more or less

I suppose it's up to you and how long you want your card to last. What kind of temperatures are you getting at idle and under load?

it doesnt matter now i think i broke my card for good .. i run crysis .. get in the game it looks like crap and then 2 secs later i crash

ooo i reduced the clocks a bit but only a bit and go crysis to run.. and now its playable on all high settings on my 8600GTS even with my singlecore processor

Yah you definitely dont want any yellow dots. Usually the counter resets when it starts popping up with yellow dots. Let it run for a decent amount of time and come back to see if the timer has reset. The best test however is actually gaming, so if you are running it smoothly without it ever crashing, you should be good to go :)

new record much? 8600GTS + sempron 3400 can play crysis at all high and 1024x1280 and playable lol but it does look a bit weird .. i think its artifacting a bit .. the trees dont look the same ..

Aww don't ruin the card please!

Just one yellow dot in atitool means it's not correct and you have to lower the clocks. My method is to put everything at stock, increase the core only till you get the first yellow dot, decrease it back till you get no dots, then start increasing the memory. Try to find a balance where you get the highest clock without artifacting.

Do what erocker says and keep an eye on the temperature.
What temperatures are you getting on load, with the fur cube running? Atitool measures that temperature.

Are you using the stock cooler?

The 8600 runs fine with a load temperature in the high 80's. But nothing more. Do not let it get over 85 preferably.

I had an 8600GTS (sold it last December). I had gotten these clocks 754 core 1126 memory (sorry don't have shader records) and a 3dmark06 stable of 5934 marks.

Maximum ever temperature it reached was 86 degrees load, but that was before I moved my rig into air-conditioned room and the ambient temperature in August here used to be like 36 degrees!!

im on stock cooler

normal Temp : 47C
with the ati tool cube running 66C
and i think its about 57-65 when playing a game

and i think ie got one nice overclock out of this card.. im at a high overclock and no artifacts or yello dots.. running for 10 mins on each artifact run =)

FINAL RESULT : 773/1630/1090 with no artifacts and 68C while on artifacts scanner on ati tool

could of went higher but its better to be safe than sorry , made 7fps more in this performance test thing that tests simple, medium and complex graphics =)

Hurray =D

Thanks for all help

Ok so 5.7 increase in fps in that overclock =) ive also noticed on crysis that i get 2-5 fps increase in some places which helps alot =)

Hey nice Oc's! Crysis is tough to handle on any computer, but for us 8600 users we have to OC to preform.

Keep pushing and post some benchies!!!
