im new to overclocking and i've read loads of different guides from all over the net. i've got myself all confused as what i need to do and how to do it.

my situation:
im trying to play assassin's creed but my cpu is letting me down. and i need to bump it up a little so that i can run the game. im not looking for the best overclocking speeds, just enough to let me to play the game.

my pc:
processor: AMD Athlon(TM) 64 3000+ 1.8GHz (1.9GHz min requirement for game to run)
Ram : 2gb
mobo: MSI K8T Neo2
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GS
OS: vista ultimate 32bit SP1

i've already downloaded the MSI Core Centre but i can't figure it out. does this program allow me to overclock the cpu? because it will only show the GPU (from what i can gather, i think it's the graphics card) but not the cpu. am i right in assuming that?

i would like to get the cpu speed up to somewhere around 2GHz. can someone please help me to achieve this.

thanks in advance for reading this post and for any help that might be given.

I found this http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_do_you_overclock_an_AMD_Athlon_64_3000_plus after googling "How to overclock a AMD 64 3000+" Hope it helps

Download Core Temp (http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/)
*This program allows you to monitor the temps of your proc so that it doesnt over heat and die...usually the safe point for a proc is LOAD 65ºC but some peoples preferances differ.

next you need to know the basics...so what we will need is

CPU-Z (http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php)
*This program allows you to see virtually everything about your computer...DX version how much ram is installed dual or single channel timings ..and more importantly in your case CPU speed HT speed and FSB speed...if you want us to really help this will be needed

now for a quick run down of what to do

go into your bios..what your going to want to do is raise your FSB(default 200mhz) 1-2mhz at a time save and reboot...this will overclock your processor...now if you just want to get to 1.9ghz and not above you probably wont need to raise the voltage so dont worry about that...now after youve over clocked your processor you boot into windows and open core temp and look at your temps...play a game for an hour or so and close it and open coretemp again and make sure it isnt past 65ºC..if everything is stable and your temps arent to high youve done it..

that is really watered down and just to get you started come back here if you want more out of her

cpu over clocking will be available in the bios under

"advanced settings"
"CPU settings"
"genie settings"
or something similar

and your going to want to adjust

"FSB"
"NB speed"
or something similar.

update:
i followed what you said and i managed to overclock the cpu to 1925.80MHz. i've not fully tested the overclock yet. as i ave been a bit busy. but i did take a screen pic with core temp, cpu-z msi's duel core centre and the assassins creed's system compatible list running. click "HERE (http://i130.photobucket.com/albums/p263/oldgit9/desktoppic.jpg)" to view the screen pic. if you have a look at it, you'll notice that the cpu required is still marked with an X. the min cpu requirement is 1.9. but i have overclocked it to 1.925GHz. so why is it still showing an X next to the cpu? is it because the original is set at a lower freq' and is code stamped with that value?

another question for you. i briefly run the game last night and it still jumped/lagged in a few places (not as much as it did do in the past). what else do i need to do, to overclock the cpu to 2.0GHz? do i have to change the multiplier, voltage or the ram settings?

i think its beacuse the game wants a dual core processor yours is only a single...alot of the jaginess is also probably because of your graphics card it looks like your hitting just the minimums of the game at this point and even at minimum the game will lag most people go look at the reccomended system requirements because if they have those or above it almost garentees them smooth game play..over clocking your cpu more and graphics card will definetely help your doing a great job so far and congrats on the oc!!!

as for ram timings and voltages we start working on those 1 at a time when your computer starts to get unstable or failing to boot.
