Memory upragde for laptop

Currently have 2 x 512Mb sticks of 533mhz in my laptop.

Want to upgrade to >2Gb

Should I get:
1) 1 x 2Gb stick
or
2) 2 x 1Gb sticks

With the 1x2Gb stick should I add my current 512Mb stick in the other slot?

Or should I get the two of the same size so I can do dual channel?

Or I could get the 2Gb and I would have the option to add *another* 2Gb later.
