im new with the computers nowadays. i use to work on 478 sockets the last time i built computers... old school i am ;). well i have the E8400 @ 3.0GHZ oc to 3.5ghz on air. im just wondering how high i can go with the ocing for benchmark on air. any advice? the coretemp of the processor is around 60 is because i had it on a load to see how hot is gets, my video card isnt clocked to what i game with. usually 905/1053, going to upgrade ram someday. just not sure what is the best for its price nowadays. if anyone could help me with that too

Considering you are on the stock cooler, you will be limited by that more than anything. If you upgrade your cooler, I don't know personally (all my Intel chips right now are S478 but that will change within the next week).

upgrade you cooler then you could easily get 4.2 on air

XIGMATEK HDT-S1283 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835233003)

I concur. That cooler smokes all other air coolers besides the OCZ's version of it (simply because it has more fin space and fin dimples).

OCZ Vendetta 2 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835202007)

More expensive at $50 + ship, though. The Xigmatek S1283 is by far the best top of the line air cooler for the price, though.

the fan is slower than the freezer 7 pro
i guess the fact that there is more surface area that it cools faster?
and how does the fan go on it? lol i cant see how it works XD

The fan speed doesn't matter nearly as much as what makes these two coolers unique: Heatpipe Direct Touch, or HDT.

Here's the bottom of their Achilles S1284 Cooler:

http://benchmarkreviews.com/images/reviews/cooling/Xigmatek_CAC-SXHH4-U02/Xigmatek_Achilles_S1284_Heatpipe_Base.jpg

Instead of having heat pass through a copper base, through heatpipes to the fins, and then dissipated into the air with the help of a fan, HDT coolers skip the copper base all together. This results in heat being wicked away from the CPU directly to the fin array to be dissipated into the air.

The S1284 isn't released yet, but it looks to be even better than the 1283 because of its additional heatpipe and increased fin surface area :)

do i need thermal compound? or something to add on or do i have to whipe down my processor?, does it come with it?

It is HEAPS better than the stock cooler. Your stock cooler is a Prius, and the Xigmatek is a BMW M3 in a 0-60 contest.

It does not come with it. Grab a tube of MX-2. If you want some good TIM remover, get the ArtiClean kit. Either that, or you can just use isopropyl alcohol. Clean stuff off with Q-tips.

Kirby123

so it has to be direct contact to the cpu? nothing between it?

DanishDevil
05-19-2008, 08:50 AM
TIM between it. The best method for the Xigmatek coolers seems to be small amounts on the heatpipes before you mount it.

Kirby123

TIM the mx-2 stuff?

DanishDevil
05-19-2008, 08:53 AM
Yes. TIM = Thermal Interface Material.

Here (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835186020) is your MX-2. Or you could save shipping and get it at a local computer store.

Thank you very much, im so use to basic silicon -.- since i use to build computers when it was 478 sock back then.... looks like i gotta clean dat cpu up good :) thanks man.

No problem! Don't forget about the thanks button :toast:

Let us know how it goes or if you need help with your OCing.

Attached is a bit of my recent work. Gotta love the Wolfies.

HOLY CRAP DUDE, your stuff stays cool........ is that cooler what you have???? do you have open case or closed? and it is air???? at 4.6 ghz?????

DanishDevil
05-19-2008, 09:04 AM
That's near top of the line watercooling on my desk...

I can however get over 4.3 on a Wolfie on air.

Wow that's nice DanishDevil! :toast:

Do you think that were I to get an E8400 my motherboard would be enough to enable it to run at 4.0GHz?

I'm itching to get that processor, the only thing which is stopping me is if my motherboard won't accept a higher FSB I'd still be stuck at 3.0GHz like I'm with the E4300...

welcome to the 4Ghz era!

it will Black :) you will probably have to update your motherboard bios in order to support 45nm.

PS, the E8400 Stock HSF isn't very good.

On the Asus website (http://www.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=3&l2=11&l3=307&model=1178&modelmenu=1) it says that 45nm is supported, so I guess I won't even need to update the bios then?

calvary1980

no, you need to have Bios update 1405 or later to enable 45nm support and 1333 FSB. http://event.asus.com/mb/45nm/nl/

if you haven't updated your Bios yet your probably at 1066 FSB and can overclock your E4300 a little more.

Sweet! What RAM did you end up with?

Kirby123
05-20-2008, 10:46 PM
g-skillz or something liek that
im getting 4X 1024 mb 1066mhz

dark2099
05-20-2008, 11:23 PM
G.Skill, for what I've read around here they're pretty good (although I can be wrong just hope I'm not).

Kirby123
05-20-2008, 11:53 PM
it was the number 1 rated ram on newegg
outta ocz and stuff

DanishDevil
05-21-2008, 12:10 AM
They're decent and cheap. Not the best OCing ram, but they're solid sticks for their price.

well i get them on friday, ill see how much better my computer runs from a 667 XD

Kirby123

i oc my cpu again it is now 3.6 on stock cooling untill i get my new heatsink. it has other specs on it as well

Kirby123

i think my voltage is to low for my processor... i have it on auto for mobo but my games randomly shut off............ not all the time though.....

dark2099
05-22-2008, 03:53 AM
Sounds like it is too low, if you can increase it, I would suggest just going up 1 or 2 settings to help keep temps as cool as possible.

Kirby123
05-22-2008, 03:58 AM
it oc a 3.0 ghz oc to a 3.6 ghz and its still at 1.2 voltage.... should i go 1.3? or 1.4?

sneekypeet
05-22-2008, 04:18 AM
From the other thread you were saying when you add voltage to the CPU it doesnt regiser, or seem to show up.

#1 try reading the mobo utility that came on the CD and see if it can read the differences.

#2 Im assuming you are usuing CPU-z which im my case never changes from the stock reading.

#3 on a stock cooler Id be careful of how much voltage I pushed due to the fact that your coors are already at 60*C. I say wait for the new cooler then think about adding voltage!

Kirby123
05-22-2008, 04:44 AM
well it runs at 60 with a load.... i have mobo set to once 80 it turns off... i know my cpu dosnt get that hot because i ran it with a load and it was around 65.... ppl say give it more voltage and it can help keep it cooler.... i have a new heatsink coming in... someone has a 4.1ghz stable of the same processor as mine... i just want to raise it one setting... i only get 1.2 voltage with 3.6 ghz.... from a 3.0....
