Get the X38 board. It's perfectly capable of running FSB1600 processors + <your OC here>. You get the whole package, helps selling it in the future for more price.

time is an issue... but so is money... and money is more important at this point in time... what an equation this is.

but can it run nicely over FSB2100? my e8500 has proven to run over that already and im hoping for more.

Well its just that your chances of "PHAIL" exponentially increase with the open box. There is a certain amount of security with a BNIB purchase!

Like I said, if you get the whole box now, it will help you when you want to sell it, because you can ask for more than if you were to sell just a board. So I'll pick the whole box X38 board.

Well, if money is an issue, don't take a chance with the premium as you will have to pay a restocking fee and it would come out to the same as the other board. (~$15 restocking fee, if I remember correctly for all open box products even if you want to exchange it)

I don't think X48 is all that "ZOMG betterrr" compared to X38 considering he's going to OC a Wolfdale on it, unless he decides to transfer his Q6700 to the P5E3-Premium and runs the E8400 on the Rampage Fmla. X38 + FSB2100 for a Wolfdale doesn't look impossible with the right NB/mem volts.

actually it's quite a different setup. i have gone and sold everything. i'll be OCing a q9450 and e8500 on the P5E3 with TEC and eventually LN2.
i dont have half the stuff in my system specs anymore. the q6700 is long gone.

I bought an Asus P5K WS Pro about a month ago open item from newegg and I only got the board....nothing else. Also I needed to screw down the northbridge because the complex heat pipe design was causing the NB not to make good contact with the heatsink(maybe thats why it was returned). Other than that it was in perfect condition.

I faced the same choice and went with the Deluxe, although some people who have gotten the open box with all accessories. If the board is borked it still has the same 3 year warranty as the retail, verified here http://www.overclock.net/intel-motherboards/308625-40-asus-maximus-extreme-thread.html . The Premium has more bios options better power managment on the NB and DDR3 dimms, but one less PCIe/x1 slot, also sans remote. I went with the Deluxe mainly cause I wanted everything like the q-connectors, fans for a watercooling setup and the qshield. The people in the thread who got open box RMAed them right away. You can get some of the missing components on ebay but if you factor in gathering the missing parts its better to spring for retail.
The X38 Deluxe has a longer bios development, main reason I went with it and the bios has settings for running 1800 for the ram. There on like the 8th bios revision. I am very happy with my purchase and say if your want to save a buck go with the deluxe but with the 3 year warranty on the premium you can't go wrong and you might luck out and get a full retail box. Alot of inexperienced people buy these boards and expect total plug and play. The ram adjustments for instance is very finnicky and one messed up setting and your BSD the thing. post back what you get if you buy the Premium. I am curious if I shouldve gone that route.

By the way fit, I bought my board OB and it came with everything and was mint. In fact I only know one person who bought a OB and didn't get anything, everyone else I know who's ever bought OB items got everything listed (his was just the board in a brown box)
