Currently using a q6600 @2.4GHZ B3 with the Scythe Ninja Rev. B and some Arctic Silver 5 paste. I've had it for a while and it sits a 45-38 idle. Playing a regular game 58-55. I ran Prime 95 with small ffts and the hot core hit 69 so i stopped it.

I'd like to overclock to at least 2.8 Ghz for a boost in performance. I was looking at getting the Thermal Right Ultra 120 Extreme. I want to know if im going to get a significant enough drop in temperatures to overclock or not. I was also going to get some Arctic Cooling MX-2 paste for a couple degrees drop as well.

get a xigmatek rifle 120mm cooler instead, way cheaper and performs 1-2 C better.

I saw on one review of the xigmatech that the thermalright did 1-2 degrees better than it. if you've seen otherwise. please link.

+1 on that

the ultra 120 is slowly fading away...go with the xigmatek rifle 120 or a hdt-s1283

btw jbunch, isn't the hdt the model # for the rifle 120? lol

I have the HDT 1283 and it keeps my CPU cool. I haven't even broke 40c underload even with running @3.2ghz@1.5v (x2 5000+ BE) I vote for the xigmatek

theres always variance when it comes to testing, people use different testing methods and different amounts of thermal paste. the bottom line is however:
the xigmatek and the thermalright perform relatively the same. the xigmatek however, is far cheaper. so which becomes the better buy?

couple it with some MX-2 and you cant go wrong!

well nonetheless. will i get a significant enough drop compared to ninja?

ive got http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=26749&vpn=SY1225SL12SH&manufacture=Scythe

which ill probably put on the xigmatech one

i would try 2 fans...that really helps coolers like those...if you dont mind the noise that is

i have the extra fans. but dont have the pins to attach it. i doubt it would be enough of a drop.

Agreed with the xigmatek S1283 Rifle 120 mm. It beats the TRUE.

so. the xigmatech should drop my temps enough to overclock. so im like 35ish idle??

jbunch07

yea that sounds about right 35-40 idle just its different for everyone but i believe that what most people get with a q6600

Yup. Something close to that... And BTW the price is around $37 USD, and noise is 20 - 32 dBA.

Yeah... that Scythe Ninja looks like it could have been designed better. However, even with that cooler you shouldn't be hitting 69C load, that's something I would expect from stock cooling... I suspect a concave or convex IHS/heatsink, or possibly a bad TIM application. IMO the best meathod is to spread it out, others will tell you that just putting a blob in the middle and letting suction do the work is the better meathod, but my mind thinks this way... the first meathod is spreading, and the second is suction. The red represents the TIM. Notice how the suction meathod doesn't cover the enitre IHS while the spread meathod does. The area not covered by the TIM in the suction meathod could cause worse temps.

What voltage are you running? If you're running stock and don't know what your stock voltage is, download Coretemp and tell me what it says for your VID.
