Out of the two programs which one do you like better & why? I"m curious b/c on Prime95 I seem to be able to run it for hours @ lower temps...mid 50sC..yet with Orthos my temps his 60C. Whats the difference?

Thx,
Main

I liked Prime95 back in the Single/Dual Core days, but I use OCCT now. Works great, multiple core support, gives OC statistics on the cpu and mobo, and also gives temp readings (including nb /sb/hdds/gpu/etc).

Never used Orthos, but heard a lot about it.

are you using the same temp monitoring program?

also what test are you using on both ?

mostly cpu torture test on prime95 & the first one with Orthos - temp progs are pc probe & speed fan - hw monitor - core temp - only pc probe/speed fan/hw monitor is right thou

if its between the two orthos stresses your cpu more , if you pass orthos you will definately pass prime95 but not nessesarily vice versa.

But I wonder how much would another program..or typical usage stress the cpu? I can run most anything..the other thing that throws up my temps are doom3 & orthos..confuses me lol

which one the small FFTs is the one that just loads the cpu and gets it the hottest

i like to use blend to make sure the mems good ;)

Yep thats the one..small ffts

yep , small FFTs is a real bugger for your cpu, if ur CPU can last em out, then its almost bullet proof.

So far i havnt seen any game or daily use program what so ever that makes my cpu cores as hot as orthos.

update- I have just downloaded OCCT and running it, it seems as good as orthos.

Temp wise, it seams OCCT get's hotter then Prime95, in my case. I was totally surprised by that

The prog used to monitor temps with both progs was Real Temp 2.5.

yeps it seems to be stressing as much as orthos with small FFTs

About stressing, i don't really know. What i do know is that my PC isn't able to run a "big" prog (game, encoding and such) for about 5 or 6 minutes after ending a priming session. The same isn't true for either Orthos or OCCT. I was told this was because of Vista, but i don't really know!

hmm, thats strange. Prime95 isnt supposed to be running after exit as far as i know.

BTW - Hugo u do know that u can push ur cpu up to 3.6ghz on stock cooling and voltage easily. i ran mine like that for a long time till i bought another heatsink and then took it to 3.8ghz

I'm running my 5000+ black @ 1.45volts @ 3200 with like a mult of 14 & fsb @ 222 - temps on this run high with the previous mentioned game & orthos..it's a killer - my question is how far can I take max temps..b/c pc probe showd me hitting 60C - dropping 2 around 58C - hitting it again..etc. Can I trust this?

I think it's something related to the HDD: it's heavily working after stopping Prime.

Better not. I lapped the CPU pretty good and the stock cooler as best i could (push pins in the way :shadedshu) which got me a 9º reduction but it still gets 70º in Prime95 and 72º in OCCT.

I only go higher for benching. Have had it @ 3.85 but 3D06 crashes if i OC the graph card: without OCing the graph card, Real temp reports 76º as highest after a 3D06 run and that's a bit too high for my liking :(

funny i could run at 3.6 on stock without lapping and max temps were 66 C (then again i have good airflow in my case).
Now at 3.8Ghz @ 1.5vcore i get maximum core temps at 69 C.

Also Realtemp was not accurate(always 7-10 c higher) both Coretemp, Speedfan (latest version) and OCCT show exactly same temps so i trust that value.

Dunno about that: this (http://maxpoint.de/de/gfx/products/cases/TwinEngine_BB/Twin_Engine_BB_Uk.pdf) (PDF file) is my case.

Also, regarding the temps difference, OCCT reports higher then Real Temp 2.5 by 4 or 5 degrees.

Back on topic, IMHO, Prime95 is best to test the system: if your system passes 24 hours, it's rock solid!
