My friend needs a laptop for college, she doesn't do any gaming or anything so she was looking at a mac, I would love to help her out but I know nothing about macs, so maybe one of you guys know? If not a mac she was going to go dell, but we all know that wouldn't turn out well XD

A simple Mac Book would probably do her just fine, go for whichever best fits her budget. If she goes for a windows machine, Lenovo is probably the best, a ThinkPad T series are very good.

If she is willing to spend a ton of money on Mac she might as well get an IBM thinkpad (Lenovo). They're much more durable and more likely to be compatible with whatever software she needs to run.

I think her grandpa is going to buy it, and he wants her to get a mac =P so a simple mac book will do then? should it have 2 gigs or 1 gig?(I don't know how much resources macs use)

That's unfortunate. You can get a larger, more powerful thinkpad T-Series for only slightly more than the mac. Knowing people that own both laptops, I must say the thinkpads are more durable (Magnesium role cage and magnesium/plastic composite lid) and resist scratching much better than the white plastic macs.
But, yes. A regular macbook would be fine for college plus they're more "trendy" for what it's worth. They're nice and small so you don't have to lug a big 19" laptop to class if you want to take it with you, which is something most people don't think about when the purchase the large laptops for college.

Yeah, I told her that mac's are way overpriced for what they are, but when you grandfather is buying it what can you say? Thanks for the help Polaris, I'll be sure to tell her about the thinkpad though

I would say get 2GB just to keep things easy and smooth, since she won't be using it for much it will give the best performance for the price, 1GB would probably get eaten up pretty fast.
