View Full Version : Want to explode my rig! How to go about it?
Error 404

My friend and I want to completely ruin my current P4 rig; exploding the CPU, the graphics card, making it burn, maybe even making the RDRAM catch on fire!
My friend says he'll buy me a new PC if I let him destroy it, so I happily agreed.
Thing is, this Dell is useless at OC'ing (except for the graphics card).
No BIOS settings available, no programs will work, and there are no jumper settings.
We want to total it: So, we thought we'd buy a Shaw 860 watt PSU from MSY computers for $27, and then run it off of that; with that price, SOMETHING will explode! (we'll remove all fans and heatsinks as well.)
Is that a good idea?
If that fails to explode the CPU, what should we try?

Hmm...
I'll see if I can put in some other form of RAM into my rig, and I'll check how much RDRAM is fetching. Then I could probably sell it to you for reduced price (as I will soon (hopefully) have no use for it). :)
Mussels

i'd just sell it for what you can. the most you'd get is a little smoke before it stops working. smoke from those old systems is bad for the environment and people, and if a capacitor pops while you're staring at it you could lose an eye.

use a shotgun. from a distance.
Seriously, as fun as it may seem, when you've seen the damage an exploding capacitor or CRT can do you really, really avoid things like this... when i did a TAFE (college equiv) course on electronics, they mentioned someone from a previous year who lost an eye to a capacitor he put too much voltage through.

the truth is that even if you8 remove the fan and run the cpu without a heatsink, Intels P4 have an inbuilt heat safty mechanism, will just crash when the temps become too high, sorry no explosion or fire.
Tomshardware have a video on it.
Mussels
05-27-2008, 10:14 AM
videos on youtube of tables exploding and such from OCing without a heatsink are fake, usually involving gunpower or explosives too.
Basically, its NOT going to explode. go ahead and hook up the car charger, its just unsafe and not going to be very exciting. Make sure to record a video of it, in case you want to prove us otherwise.

take out the psu and connect directly the mb to power grid but do it outside not in your house you may cause fire ;i'm sure will blow up
DrPepper

Just stick a few full deoderant cans in the case set it on fire and bang. Make sure your outside and far away! my friend did this in his house and destroyed his roof from one can.

Haha, I don't have a video camera, but I'll take some pics. Unless my friend uses his phone-cam...
You know how the Pentium 4 motherboards have a little 4 pin auxillary power connector? I'll just connect some high voltage to that, and see what happens. :D
I doubt that a capacitor would make it through the case of the Dell, as well.
If that fails, we'll douse the mobo in water and see what happens.
If that fails, then its time for the deoderant cans...

My friend also reckons he can short out the SHAW PSU so that it will not be voltage protected and feed 860 watts into the motherboard!
Hopefully this will work...

just grab a soldering iron and start "fixing" the inside of the power supply. BUT, before you plug it in, make sure you have a good breaker box for your wall socket. So, when you pop the circuit, its easy to access. I would also make sure you unplug other thing on that circuit, like your tv and stuff. Somehow this is starting to seem like a bad Idea. You better hope he doesnt screw the pooch on this one and fry your pc then give you a "peace out".
Just part it out if your so itchy to get rid of it. there are so many other things you could blow up if your really feel the need. Like an old tv, or your old GiJoe figures.

like a previous person said, cans of deoderent should go bang if you can raise the temps enough, but most of the other stuff will either melt or just shut down with a little bit of smoke. Matchstick bomb, anyone? haha.

do something noble and instead of destroying it why dont you go and find a school or youth club/community center and donate it to them as im sure they will get some kind of use out of it.
they dont do anything like you see in the vids, i fried some components myself after getting told parts are fine by uneducated sales people who try and claim to be pc engineers, 12v directly to all of the components on the mobo cpu or gcard and it just does a little spark when you touch it like crossing a + and a - on a battery. kills the hardware but it sure aint no firework show ;)

You can't gaurentee an explosion with electricity even going well over the wattage. I had 10k volts surge through my house, blew a nickle size hole in a surge suppressor, fried my PSU but didn't blow anything up on the computer. Now thats 10 k v. Obvious it got past the surge suppressor since it fried the power supply but it didn't get past that, why? Because what might blow a capacitor also very well might burn through a wire before getting anywhere remotely dangerous. You melt a connection on a circuit board its the same as melting through a wire, nothing outwardly noticeable, no boom. Just boredom and a dead piece of equipment.
Take the word of someone who knows, my buddy and I used to think pipe bombs were great fun, till he blew one up in his face. Explosions might look nifty on tv, but they are best handled by professionals. Buddy likes blowing things up till him wait till hes an adult and get a job as a powder monkey or the like.

petrol and a light, that should do the trick

Explosion from electricity is tough.
Here is wat I would do:
Get rocket engines. Grind up 10 or 20 A type motors. Fill the inside of the computer with them. Attach the igniter to the 12 volt part of the PSU. Run 500ft away. Turn it on.
I have done this (not in a PC), and it made a 20ft high smoke and fire explosion that scorched the concrete and melted the metal (and that was only 7 motors (type A))
Here is some more info:
Buy a box of 50 of these (about $20) - http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXF395&P=M
You can use higher letters (B, C, D, etc) but some require you to be older to buy. I do have a F on hand...
Here is the igniter, basically nichrome wire (gets red hot) - http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXF569&P=M
Here is the whole kit! - http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXF416&P=7
Also I take no responsibility if you scorch all the hair off the back of your hands, like I did.
douse it in gasoline and turn it on. Be very far away, lol... and outside of course
BOOM

douse it in gasoline and turn it on. Be very far away, lol... and outside of course
BOOM
Gasoline is very unstable in a hot environment (fumes burn, and BAM), and heavy to transport, thats why I did not recommend it.

I'm probably the king of frying hardware on this forum. All that happens is some smoke when you short something. Nothing spectacular at all. You'll probably have to resort to explosive to get it to explode in any enjoyable fashion.
One thing tho, make your friend buy the new rig first, otherwise, you'll get screwed. I can almost guaranty it.

If you want to make your computer explode, you should first find some pure sodium (Na). Put a cup of water inside of the case, and then drop the pure sodium in it. I guarantee there will be an explosion. Also, find some way to drop the sodium in from a distance, so that your hand will not get blown off!!!

Hmm. I'm actually having second thoughts about this one...
I only planned to make it explode using electricity, not explosives (can't get them easily in Australia anyway :( ), and if it requires explosives to get a smoke and loudness, then screw that!
Maybe I will upgrade my computer. Or sell it and get $$ to make a better computer.
And even if I still wanted to blow it up, I'd have nowhere to do it...

2) Not blowing it up anymore. I would have only let him do it if he'd given me the new PC first.
3) $200 is fine. I'd be able to combine that with some savings from a part time job and buy a better laptop.
