A story:

So my brother and sister in law had me over to their house to try and figure out why their computer is running so slow and always have. So I get over there, figuring I'll run Crapcleaner and an anti-spyware and everything will be hunky-dory. Still slow. So on a whim, I download CPU-Z for specs and I find this system running Vista!

An Intel P4 631 Cedar Mill
512mb PC2-4300 RAM.

Suffice it to say I found the problem. The mobo is an Intel D945GCL (http://www.intel.com/products/motherboard/D945GCL/index.htm) which according to Intel's site supports C2D and DDR2 667 Ram. I don't know much about Intel, but I was thinking a cheap C2D and 2x1 gig of RAM may give them a prayer. The board supports 2x2 gig if I can get an outstanding deal on it. They're not looking to spend more than 100 bucks total on my upgrades. The system will be running stock so OCability is a non-factor.

Help me be a hero?:D

I have a 1GB DDR2 667 stick of Corsair Value ram on the cheap to help. It is in my FS thread.

By looking at the board's support page, it doesn't look like it supports the C2D line.

The processor isn't the problem, the RAM is. Stick 2GB in there and it should speed up. If you have an old flash drive that is readyboost capable you can stick that in the machine also, readyboost really speeds up Vista on machines with only 512MB of RAM.

+1 on that.

That 631 proc isn't that bad. Instead of spending money on proc and mem, i would just buy 2 x 1 gb ram. Fry's has is for $20 AR (Crucial DDR2 667). Check on Crucial's website for compatible ram.

Or you know I just bought this

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148097

Depending on the ram you have you can go up to 2.25/2.5.

or go with this

Cheap under $30 solution;)
