I'm sick of my ancient (1999) phone, which although it is not a brick (its about the size of a normal modern phone) it has a distinct lack of features:(. Except for Tetris.
Anyway, I'm now in the market for a cheap phone, but I want it to have the following features:
MP3/Video player (doesn't have to be very good though).
Micro SD expansion slot (to put my music on)
Mini-USb port for charging/data transfer, so I don't have to rely on a crappy proprietary adapter.:banghead:
Camera. (preferably better than 1 MP)
It does, of course, have to look cool. But it must be relatively cheap, and preferably not a flip-phone.
Any suggestions?

What is your carrier and what GSM ranges do you need?

My carrier/network supplier is Telstra, and GSM is everywhere!
I'm thinking either a motorola or a sony ericsson. They look cool.

you can never go wrong with a Nokias durability if its a phone you want. If its a smartphone then get a HTC.

Nokias are overpriced and ugly.
They are reliable I have heard, but they are outsourced to Asia like all the others. ;)

Needs to be cheap, like, $100 less than an iPhone at least.
Doesn't need to have a full keyboard, but that would be a nice feature.
Can all mobile phones with 3G run Opera Mini? I wouldn't mind having the internet on my phone.

All 3G has browsing capability. But if its "Opera mini", I have no idea.;)

The Nokia 6288 looks pretty good; does it play movies?
Also, just a random questions: can phones play Doom? :D
I'll look around and see if Telstra has any deals on the 6288.

Our phones have an pwnage network thingy called 3G. I don't know what it is, but it gets us mobile internet! :D
My current phone doesn't have it though, and the screen is only good for 3 lines of text!! :banghead:
Any other suggestions? The Nokia sounds pretty cool, but it doesn't look all that great. But something along the same lines in terms of features would be perfect!

personally, i own a nokia 6500 classic; its compact, light, has great battery life and is made almost entirely of brushed aluminum so its pretty damn durable too.

The old iphone or the new one?
The iphone is supposed to be released with a 3g update for 199.99. I am really thinking about getting one at that price point.

Hahaha, not quite mobile...
I'm considering the new iPhone 8 GB, but in Australia Apple somehow manages justifying an extra 20 - 30% added to the price of its products.:slap:
I think I'll import one from America! :nutkick:
Also, If I can't get an iPhone, then I'll definitely look into the Nokias.

IMO, keep the features DOWN. There is nothing worse that scrolling through menus on a mobile phone. What you need is a phone, a phonebook, and SMS/message database. Decide whether sending/receiving emails is important. If so, then blackberries win.
All other features are BS and unnecessary. You'll impress a few people ONCE when you sit in class and show them your new gadget. But you wont score any more girls with it. It wont replace your PC for ww or emails. It wont replace your TV and DVD player for movies. It wont replace your PC/Hi-fi for music. I'd be suprised if you used if for MP3 unless you like listening to the same 30minutes of songs over and over in low-fi.
#1. MP3/Video player (doesn't have to be very good though) - I have a mobile phone that has this. Its BS. What's the point of carrying around a few minutes worth of "advertising" clips? Are you a marketing robot?
#2. Micro SD expansion slot (to put my music on). If you like listening to MP3, ie. a lot of public transportation time, then OK, but perhaps a dedicated MP3 player is better. A video ipod allows you to store lots of full movies. You can connect it to the TV. That works.
#3. Mini-USb port for charging/data transfer, so I don't have to rely on a crappy proprietary adapter. Just face the fact, no body (or very few) does this.
#4. Camera. (preferably better than 1 MP). What will you use this for? Not for decent pictures. Never mind the MP, the non-focusing plastic lenses are shyt. If you want to take pictures of somebody's bottom for a laugh, OK. But if you want pictures of friends or objects, get a focusing digital camera with a proper glass lens.
If you really want an all-in-one, try the new iphone v2. Seems to be what you are looking for.

About your points:
I'm not needing a new phone for a 'chick magnet', I already have a girlfriend. :P
Other than that, my phone is complete BS anyway: it is a relic from 1999.
#1: Yes, I'll definately be using it for watching videos. I have a youtube downloader program, and knowledge of some cool stuff on youtube. I'll also be using it for MP3 playing, because I have lots of music and my 2 gig Sony Walkman doesn't have enough space for it! (And I only listen to 192 kb/s quality music or higher). Also, the battery is running down.
#2: with 8 gigs in an iPhone, I wont need an expansion slot! :)
#3: Yeah, I guess you're right about the proprietry adapter stuff. I'll live with it. (I even lost my cable for my current phone!)
#4: Cameras are useful for excursions/holidays and stuff, because I'd always have it on me (unlike a clunky digital camera).
So yeah, definately going after an iPhone!

Eh, I'd look after my phone: it need not be indestructible. It just needs to work the way I want it to!
My current phone is indestructable though. I hurled it accross a courtyard (while it was on), and it barely got scratched!:D:roll:

Lol, we had one of those when I was a kid (my parents collected antiques), and I would wind the hell out of it and have my friends touch this little deal inside that would give a hell of a zap! It was BIG fun!:D

I picked up a nokia 6301 last week. It has micro sd, mini usb, bluetooth, camera, video recorder w audio, mp3 player, spkr phone. It's supposed to play media but i haven't tried yet. It comes with 1G micrso sd, upgradable to 2G. Doesn't officially support it, but is supposed to work with 4G
so far i only have two complaints, no flash for the camera(most were not very useful anyways). and the res for the video is lower than my 6 year old web cam. Other than that, all other complaints would be directed at my carrier.
The camera seems to work well for what it is. The pic of my dog in the pet thread was taken with the phone.
edit: and it's not a flip phone
