View Full Version : Geforce 9 series ruined Nvidia's good reputation?

I've been using Nvidia since 2002 and I have to say that the Geforce 9 series is the biggest disappointment ever. All the Geforce 9 cards are Geforce 8 cards in disguise and it pissed me off that so many people I know bought a Geforce 9 product, thinking that they bought the latest technology.
I actually know people who upgraded from 8800GTS 320MB to 9800GTX and from HD3870 to 9800GTX. This pisses me off big time.
ATI had a good reason to release the HD3 series because the HD2 was hurting ATI's reputation. Nvidia had no good reason to release all Geforce 8 cards again, with another name.
So, what do you guys thing about this? I am pretty sure that my next card is going to be an ATI card. I hope that many people feel the same way.

Threads in the video card sub-forum should be for people asking for advice, needing some type of concept explained, or giving some type of useful information (how-to guide, in depth explanation of concept, etc). Please post discussions such as these in general nonsense. Thank you.

I upgraded from a 29000XT to a 9800gtx, and i love it.
sure its the same gpu, but *most* 8800gts g92's wont run 820-850mhz/2000+ shader/2500 memory.. Most 9800gtx's will :)
that said, i dont think its worth the *9* name, maybe 8900GTX.

Sandbagging...:shadedshu
The only thing that does is get you caught up in a cycle of BS. The 9800gtx is the pinnacle of a long line of marginal improvements to the G80. The G80 was fast as hell in its hay day but sticking with it for so long is about to bite NV in the butt, big time

I feel the same way, that nVidia has been sandbagging for quite some time now.
To this thread, though - I can't vote as I've been ATI loyal since I had to move on from my VooDoo3 ages ago.

it is a huge disappointment... basically, by recycling the same gpu into a new series just gives them a lot of hype and lets them sell the same product with a higher price, and an even higher one at the release point

Don't feel sorry for me, I'm very happy with my gx2. You guys that make these posts saying " I feel sorry for you 9800 owners" make me laugh.:roll::laugh:
BTW, best thing I've done was get rid of my 320 mb 8800gts for my 9800gx2(step up by the way), my 8600gt I replaced with the 8800 gave me the same performance in crysis as the 8800. Infact, that 8800 was the most dissapointing card I've ever had.:shadedshu
Also, I'm no fan boy. Before the 8600gt, I had a x1950pro extreme gamer edition, and before that a x800pro, then I had nvidia and back to ATI and so on and so on. I go for the best card I can afford at the time.

The 9800GX2 is a new product. It's two 8800 cards in one. I don't feel sorry about people who buy the 9800GX2. But in all fairness, the 9800GX2 should be named 8850GX2 and not 9800GX2.

Its marketing. Sure, no new innovation and yada yada, but they still offered ways of improvement over the 8xxx series to sell more and still offer improvement before the new gens. It was our own fault for buying into hype before things come out. Its not even a full series, 3 (well 4 actually I guess, one of those is a shamelees rebrand) cards make up the 9xxx line, one offered superb sli performance, better than any other nvidia card to date. One offered a dual-gpu solution, absent in the 8xxx series, and the other pushed the g92. Too many cards sure, but people get hung up on the name, but those 3 all brought at least a little something new to the table, and they've all done quite well. A name doesn't matter, think of them as 8 series if you want. It seems they may have just wanted to finish out the 1000s here before moving on to a new naming scheme for the new tech. And since they did bring something new to the table, they didn't want them to get lost in the 8 series. And, they ultimately just want to make money, and new things do that best.....:)

I can agree with that.

Its great how people are trying to turn their 9600GSOin to 8800GTS

i dunno, my fx5200 ultra played Oblivion with the old shader model mod. I think I played in some akward resolution though like 720x680
Out of the 9 series, the 9600gt only stood out for being a fantastic card for the price and to have one of the best SLI scalars thus far. The 9600GSO is a rebadged 8800GS, the 9800GTX is a rebadged 8800GTS + the ability to have triple SLI. The 9800GX2 is two 8800GTS glued together. There has very little R&D towards the 9 series.

Sorry, but this thread is full of immature bs. Why does the naming of the cards piss you guys off so much? As long as it works like a charm STOP BITCHING AND WASTING FORUM SPACE.
um, dude, you must have blocked out the fx/gf5 series from your memory, those cards where and even ARE the WORST thing nvidia ever did to the consumer.....horrible!!!!!!
the g92 should ether have ALL been 9 series cards OR all been 8 series, the crap nvidia pulled naming them both, AND RENAMING FAILING PRODUCTS (8800gs to 9600gso) was and is bullshit........
You need to really grow up, note the 8800GS wasn't even released to the consumer properly-it had no marketing. Get with the times too, what happend half a bloody decade ago isn't relevant with the present, I don't see nvidia's fabs making any FX5xxx wafers anymore.

You know what? Why don't you check your claims again. NONE of the 9 series are exactly identical to the 8 series, and the 9600GT is far cheaper than the 8800GT. The 9800GTX is not a 8800GTS 512MB entirely, sure similar perf, but the fact that it has two times the power phases, and has this power saving feature (rip off of the Gigabyte DES....?), makes it different. Pricing?.... almost the same?
The 9 series didn't have much hype in my opinion, only the 9800GX2 did, but thats different. I could scream at AMD for naming the RV670s HD3xxx, instead of what they used to do with die shrinks.

Yeah... The little R&D is because nvidia were chucking all their effort into the GTX2xx

Well we are not talking about the gtx2xx series here in this thread. The 9 series was nothing but rebadging.
