Well, after over 10 feet of snow this winter, we received 10 inches of rain over the weekend.

Lake Delton (near Wisconsin Dells) carved a chasm and emptied into the Wis. River.

Many, many towns and cities in SE Wis. are under water.

Click here (http://www.jsonline.com/site/photographerphotos/gallery.aspx?catid=1263) to see some incredible pictures from around the state, including the now empty lake.

We are supposed to get more rain Wednesday and Thursday :wtf:

Wow... be careful... will your house be safe for heaven forbid an emergency should arise?

At first I didn't notice this was in "General Nonsense" and I thought you had a water-cooled system which went wrong, but dang a risk of having a house flooded is much more serious than getting a pc flooded. :(

Take care.

My wife and I live on a river, but the water will never rise to where it would flood our home, as the other side of the river bank is about 20 feet lower than our side.

Our river is in a overflow stage and has eliminated my ATV trails. Drat.

Here (http://video.ap.org/v/Legacy.aspx?partner=en-ap&g=a58801b0-588c-4564-9075-3f63c8f6e281&f=WIMIL&mk=en-ap) is raw video footage of what can happen to a home when a lake drains. Very sad for these folks.

Look at the pictures of where the lake carved away the road to get to the Wisconsin River.
It also took out all the sewer lines running along that road.
Raw sewage is pouring into the WIs. River. Yukkk.
I'm glad we don't live down river from there.

Main Street was a river....they fixed it all up real quick, got everything dried out...now it's all nice and sunny...hope it stays like this. They said something about more rain, but I don't think it's gonna be a ton like we got over the weekend.

Now this really sucks ...

Lake Delton Officials Didn't Renew FEMA Flood Insurance
LAKE DELTON, Wis. -- Those property owners who had their homes swept away or destroyed as Lake Delton flooded its banks won't be covered by national flood insurance because the Village of Lake Delton had suspended its participation in the National Flood Insurance Program.

So far, village officials have pointed to a lack of flooding problems in the past as reasons for why the village wasn't signed up for the FEMA flood insurance program.

My wife just called me and said the fire department in Montello WI (about 7 miles down river of us) is making sandbags by the truckload.

Hope it's just a proactive measure in case of upcoming rain, and not that the river through the town (and/or the dam) are erroding away.

I'd hate to have her new little business flooded, since she just opened it and we worked our butts off getting the place in good shape. DOH!

Apparently the dam in Mukwanago is about to let go. I live right next door to the Little Menomonee River which is generally a dried up stream. (you can jump over it.) Right now it's a raging river keeping my sub-pump working overtime. Water is bubbling up from manhole covers in Milwaukee, and downtown Waukesha is all under water!

Kreij
06-11-2008, 01:00 AM
I just read that a large chunk of peat bog broke loose in Phantom lake and jammed up against the dam. This caused the water to flow around the dam saturating the soil around the dam and making its integrity questionable.

If the dam goes it is not high threat, it willl just dump a lot of water into the fox river that may cause problems in already flooding areas.

Get out you row boats and life jackets :toast:

Bansticks are not meant to use as tools for threatening, demanding or showing anger. Bansticks, when removed from their suede or sometimes silk holster, are to be used. If you're not actually using it it has to remain in the holster. And when you're done with it, you put it back, all in a single swift move.

From what I hear, it is okay to remove the ban stick from its protective sheath for the occasional cleaning. One does not want the congealed blood to get to thick upon it.

On Topic : It's really looking like a downpour is about to happen here. It may just be threatening and nothing will come of it. The thunder is usually a good indicator of rain though.

On the upside, it's not getting any worse. Not a whole lot better yet, but at least its not raining ;) It's actually a beautiful, warm, sunny day here.

Here's another interesting little titbit to keep things in perspective ...
Staggering amounts of rain have fallen on southern Wisconsin in recent days. Some places saw more than 6 inches in 24 hours Thursday.

Many places got well over 10 inches in the last week since this started.

To put that into perspective, an inch of rain falling on 1 acre of ground is equal to about 27,154 gallons and weighs about 113 tons, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Multiply that over thousands and thousands of acres and you get an idea of how much water southern Wisconsin has been dealing with in the last week.

We get regular rain here in Wisconsin, we just don't get this much all at once.
To get an inch of rain once or twice a week is no problem, and the farmers love it.
To get 15 inches in 4 days is a problem.
Once the ground saturates, anything more that 1/4 inch runs off and into the creeks, streams and rivers. This too is not that big of a problem until you have all of the rivers in half of a state running at flood level. The water has to go somewhere.
Even the major rivers cannot contain the shear volume of water that is running into them.

All this water is headed to the Mississippi river. It is going to have real problems soon, and may be flooding already. Remember that a gajillion gallons of water is coming from Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan and Indiana.

Especially Iowa. They got hammered even worse than we did.
If you want to see some serious flooding, google "Cedar Rapids Iowa Flooding".

i live next to a river as well. this year has been odd for runoff. last year the water was just starting to peak 'bout now. This year it exceeded last years levels two weeks ago and has dropped 'bout a meter now. They say that runoff is late this year and they aren't sure where all the water came from. this river drains a basin of 240,000 square kilometers of rocky mountain joy. I believe it is about 1/4 of british columbia and all of Great britain would prolly fit in it. The water should be along soon. Last year we had a snow pack of 150% this year we are only at 110%

The county's emergency management office says residents in low areas downstream from Pardeeville are being asked to voluntarily evacuate. This includes areas around the Fox River west of Pardeeville, Lower Lake, Spring Lake and Swan Lake.

The state's emergency management office says the dam is overflowing and passing flow through the temporary spillway over Wisconsin 22. It says water has been rising about one inch an hour. Authorities expect it to crest later tonight.

Not good ...

BREAKING NEWS:
A warning to residents in Pardeeville in Columbia County. Residents in low areas downstream from Park Lake in Pardeeville have been warned to evacuate. This is a voluntary evacuation. Water from Park Lake is topping over Highway 22 through Pardeeville. Half of the road has already been washed away. And Emergency Management Officials fear the rest of the road could be wiped-out. If this happens, Park Lake would drain into Spring Lake, and then into Fox River. At this moment, the dam in Pardeeville is holding-up. Residents can go to the shelter at St. Mary's School in Portage, as well as St. John’s Lutheran School and the River of Life Church. Stay with NBC15 and NBC15.com for continuing coverage.

From the Associated Press:
Columbia County Deputy director of emergency management Kathy Johnson says the dam itself is holding but water is getting out and has eroded half of state highway 22. That's the main street in town and she says it's being eroded to the center line.

She says all gas, electric, sewer and water utilities have been shut off to home north of the dam. And people are being told downstream and
in other low lying areas to watch out.

As in my last post I heard the dam let go. I hope it isn't true.

Crap ...

PARDEEVILLE, Wis. -- State officials said the Pardeeville dam is partially breaching Saturday.

Columbia County authorities are evacuating all affected homes.

Wisconsin Emergency Management spokesman Tim Le Monds said the situation is serious.

It's not clear yet how many people are being evacuated or how many homes are threatened.

IR, if I had a way to send you some water you would be getting it already :)

We will be fine, but the Pardeeville dam failing is going to send tons of water into the Fox River which will end up flowing through a ton of small towns that are already flooded (see pictures above)

That can cause more dams to fail and produce a dominoe effect.
Not good at all.

As you can see from the above pictures, the Montello dam is already completely submerged.
This could get ugly.
I will get my camera ready.

As if there weren't enough problems ...
Fond du Lac County residents are reporting that people falsely identifying themselves as Federal Emergency Management Agency officials are asking to inspect homes.

FEMA officials said today there are no teams in the Fond du Lac area. FEMA inspection teams carry photo ID, and residents are urged to always ask to see this ID before allowing someone to inspect a home. FEMA also doesn't charge money to inspect a home.

To find out if FEMA teams are in an area, residents may contact their County Emergency Management Office.

No, it's completely different, both of those cases the victim would be just standing there minding their own business. In this real case with what's going on it's people letting someone into their home.
A more accurate analogy would be letting your child spend the night at never land ranch and then wondering why they were little-boy-man-raped.
I don't understand why everyone always gets mad at someone who tells the truth. Sometimes the truth hurts.

Here is a picture from Montello that someone else shot.
The water was stirring so violently near this little bridge it created a wall of foam.
Weird.

This news was posted at 7:00 am this morning. Gives you an idea of how widespread the problems are.
DAM CONDITIONS:

The Dept. of Natural Resources is monitoring dams in southern Wisconsin. Five dams have failed so far, however many others have been damaged. There are 85 high-hazard dams in the counties affected by this week’s severe weather and many other smaller dams.

- The city-owned Pardeeville dam on the Fox River is failing. However, it is still holding back Park Lake. Temporary repairs have started to stabilize the dam. A portion of WIS 22 that forms the embankment on one side of the lake overtopped, releasing water, but water has now returned to an emergency channel built last week. Eight homes downstream have been evacuated. Portage water levels should not be affected significantly because of massive wetlands between the two cities.

- The Beaver Dam River rose significantly. The river was up against the side of several buildings causing concern for structural collapse of the buildings. Beaver Dam issued mandatory evacuations for a 3-4 block area. Advisory evacuations were also given for 1 -2 blocks both north and south of the mandatory evacuation area. Motor vehicle and foot traffic is not being allowed in the mandatory evacuation area, while foot traffic of residents is being allowed in the advisory evacuation area.

- A portion of the embankment on a dam in Grand River Marsh has been overtopped.

- DNR has sent two engineers to an unauthorized dam in Sauk County that appears to be failing. The dam was intentionally breached by staff creating a relatively stable condition. It will continue to be monitored.

- The Waterford dam made it through the night and the water is receding. Concerns for the stability of the dam have diminished.

- For current National Weather Service water levels and flood predictions: http://www.weather.gov/ahps/forecasts.php
