Backup PC listed in specs... it has an S3 Savage graphics chip. Guess how much fps I get in GLquake (Quake 1 from 1996). The person who guesses closest wins fourty (40) Internets. Offer ends when page 2 is reached, using default User CP settings.

I'm guessin a ballpark of around 400-450 FPS at 640x480; 350-375 at 800x600 - that P4 is doing the majority of the work, and it's a good 5-6 years younger than Quake

ha ha no specs!! 800*600 maybe around 400-500. I believe 800x600 was the highest at the time anyway......... those were the good days. Then came 1024x768

300-350 with a small dip into 200 range. I will probably win I played last year on a similar system with the ezquake client (http://ezquake.sourceforge.net).

PS, what the hell are 40 internets lol.

IIRC S3 Savage was onboard, or PCI GPU. These sorts of things were replaced by early AGP boards like ATI 7500. My guess is:

800 x 600 : 23 fps
1024 x 768 : 15fps
1280 x 1024 : 6fps

#2: The Backup PC
Intel Pentium 4 Northwood 2.8GHz, 533FSB
1x512MB Crucial DDR400
Some Biostar Skt 478 mobo with AGP4x
32MB Onboard Graphics
60GB IDE Hard Drive
180w FSP Power Supply

Lemonadesoda, it's onboard.

120 - 140? I've got a crappy old Pentium III Celeron that runs it at about 20 FPS on 640 x 480 with an old S3 Trio 8 MB graphics card, and it runs Windows 98.

Question: do you have Windows XP on it, and does that screw around with DOS based games?
I know Windows XP f-cks up Doom really badly...

no Windows XP doesn't screw it up, nobody plays stock quake now. since they released the source there has been "clients" ezquake, fuhquake and darkplaces. some of them use HDR and Bloom look better than Q3.

I would like to revise my figures. I have to say I never heard of GLQuake 1, and was assuming you were driving Quake 3 Arena engine or similar. My FPS above is for Quake 3.

So for "GLQuake", I'm going to offer the following guess:

800 x 600 : 46 fps
1024 x 768 : 32 fps
1280 x 1024 : 17 fps

LemonadeSoda wins with his answer of 15 fps in 1024x768 (that's what I was running).
I actually got 20fps, but LemonadeSoda was closest.

Great, now I get to find out that after painfully writing zeros to everything and losing fucking everything I had, my legitimate windows xp home key has been activated too much. Damn virus! :nutkick:

WOW. 20fps in Quake version 1. That sucks! You must have been running it on ultra-high 256 color mode.

P.S. You should have used these optimised drivers for better FPS: http://piv.pivpiv.dk/ ;)

so what do I do about my windows copy?
it is a legitimate key, but I don't really want to call the guys in India. it's hard enough for people from my own country to understand me cause I talk so fast or I run my words togeather, etc
