many people have been through flooding situations. Anyone have any good stories about stupid things done during flooding?
this is not to be-little any horrible experience people have endured during natural disasters or enduring at the moment. If this thread offends you, please accept my appologies, it was not my intent.
i don't think mine will make the top ten list but it was something to remember. I had a 1982 Z-28 that i had spent a fair bit of time and money on. Came home one night to find that there was a small river where my driveway was supposed to be. Major downpour had caused some flash flooding in the area. All I could think was, I'm hungry, I need a shower and there is alot of water between me and my bed. screw it, how deep could it be? So yep, into the throttle... I could see the top third of the fence around the riding ring so I knew what path to follow ... dumbass! the water had removed some of my gravel driveway, like one would expect. The front end drops down into the water and a wave comes up the hood. First thought was cool, it didn't last long though lol. When the water was going over the top of the windsheild and obstructing any view out the t-roofs I started to question my decision making skills... i wasn't sure where exactly i was going and the pond beside my driveway was pretty deep. At this point i'm thinking: hammer the throttle and see if I can come out the other side or get out and swim. This was my car so yep, hammered down the throttle. i couldn't believe it was still runnung. I had cut a big hole in the hood and covered it with a big scoop that was open at the windshield end ( the motor i put in it didn't fit lol, couldn't close the hood). I looked out the driver side window and was relieved to see that the water line was only 'bout 8inches up from the bottom of the glass. i could feel the car drifting sideways but i stayed into it and made it out the otherside. It was a good thing it wasn't too big a stretch, the experience only lasted maybe 20 seconds but it was long enough to get alot of water in the car ... in everything. I shut it off and opened the door. it was like the wall of an above ground swimming pool burst and the pool was draing fast. i changed all the fluids and got everything dried out after a week. no damage... something to remember though

1. either people don't do the stupid things I do,
2. they don't want to admit they do the stupid things I do,
3. or they don't like being laughed at.
I'm going with 2 and 3 lol
When you do something stupid and survive, sharing is the best thing you could do. plus if you can laugh at yourself it's more fun laughing at others:)

Nice! I bet the heart was pumping pretty hard during that little adventure.
I've watched people attempt things like you went through and lose big time. It's fun to watch cars and trucks float away like boats down a flooded road. I had a 4x4 Toyota truck some years back. I used to take that little truck through hell and it would come back for more. It had a small lift on it with like 32" tires nothing fancy. I would watch the bigger much more powerful chevy's and fords get stuck in a little mud, but my little Toy was there to help pull them out everytime. Man I miss that little bastard :ohwell: I could run that truck through water up and over the hood with no problems.

That's pretty amazing, Skitz. I am really suprised your car kept running, but the older cars were better for that than the new ones.
This is not really a flood story, but before we got our gravel driveway (about 900 feet long) fixed it had very large holes and low spots in it.
Near the road end, there was a very large hole that formed. When water would stand in it I would drive though it fast and splash all of the water and sand out making the hole even bigger.
Anyway, one winter the hole filled with water and then froze over.
My wife drove too slowly over it and when she got to the middle the ice collapsed and her car was stuck in the hole because she could get no traction to drive up and over the remaining ice.
The towing guy said it was the first time he ever had to tow someone out of their own drieway. :D

yeah, i could feel my pulse everywhere lol, right down to my toes
my toyota was great too. it was only a 2x4 but that's why i bought it. my frinds liked to crawl over stuff, me I liked to whale over it. Best air was about 8 feet over a distance of about 25 - 30 feet. Hit real hard but no damage, in fact I did it twice just to make sure it didn't want to break lol. when I bought it, the motor was in a box in many peices. paid $150 for it and only had to replace a bent valve and the spark plugs.:) hehe got it running on one cylinder (3 bad plugs)

I have experience making the holes and making them bigger but I too have never witnessed anyone getting stuck in one. sweet
If the story has water where it ain't supposed to be then it good to go...:)

i think spending most of my life in smaller somewhat remote communities, I've spent alot of time outdoors with nature. The only bad weather i haven't really felt was high winds. no tornados or hurricanes etc. rivers have always provided alot of entertainment. we used to spend so much time floating down the river, we came up with all sorts of stupid things to do to make it more interesting. good weather, bad weather, daytime, nighttime, oars, no oars... we did it all. There was a 6 foot waterfall we hit every way we could think of, even tried riding the boat upsidedown over it:). There wasn't a single trip that we didn't flip the boat. It was a 12 foot aluminum car topper. They are pretty tough lol. a little harder to flip than a canoe though.:)
Yes, river trips are fun at night too. You'd be surprized how much light a burning bail of hay on the bow will put off
this should more or less explain my insensitivity to water.

Here's another somewhat water related :D
I was riding my ATV on the trails in our river overflow area (this is before the flooding in the last week). The trail had been really soupy from previous rain, but my ATV handles it well.
I got a point in the trail and buried my ATV in mud, and it wouldn't move.
I had to get off and wade through almost knee deep mud to tie the winch line to a tree to get it out.
One of my shoes go sucked off in the mud so I had to dig that out too.
When I got back and took off my shoes, my wife took one look at my socks (they were white originally, now completely black from the mud) and said, "Just throw those away, I'll never get them clean."
We had a fire going in the portable firepit in front of the house, so I just pitched them in. :D
Thank God I had the foresight to get a winch on my ATV when I bought it.

Okay, when I was really young (think Jurrasic era) our basement flooded.
My sister and I got on our swimsuits because we thought it was great that we now had an indoor swimming pool.
Our parents killed that idea, thankfully. :D
