View Full Version : The increase (ATI's single GPU) from last gen to new gen in 3D06
Look @ this score (from jimmyz's Vision Tek 4850 review (http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?p=3059788#post3059788)):

Compare it to these scores (taken from freaksavior's HD 3K Reference, Support, and 3dmark score page (http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=48426&highlight=alcpone%27s)):

It grabs the 2nd score and it isn't even "super clocked" yet! Plus, considering this is the lower of the next gen 2 cards (single GPU), WOW!!

Just IMAGINE! how this card will run when you OC it, my GOD! and people say its not that groundbreaking? in my eyes this single core graphic card is gonna be a lot of fun in my system.
When you see the 16k barrier on 3870 and on 4850 hits the 15k at 4ghzCPU and card at 700 /1100 , em i smelling a 19-20k in 3DMark06 on 4870 stock? Or do you folks think it will have its glory on 17-18 in 06?
Even tho im not THAT interest in 06 scores (might seems so) i reckon it will handle what we feed it in a reasonable fps range in the most current games, actually all i want is to run AOC on High quality and 2700meter distance in a 70-90fps range. Is this to much to ask? or is it in hands reach?

Personally, I'm not impressed.
R7xx has been delayed umpteen times. And while yes it is a lot better than R6xx, it isnt the same impovement factor that ATI achieved in a similar 18 month period (x800 to hd 3800).
However, maybe that the standard 3dmark06 benchmark isnt showing off the true performance gains with the R7xxx. Perhaps higher resolution, e.g. 1600x1200 or 1920x1200 is where we will see a much bigger lead between the 4850 and 3850 (say). The bog standard 3dmark06 1280x1024 (i think) just doesnt cut it as a test anymore.

Well considering the price/performance of the 4850 its ALOT more considerable then the GTX260 with almost the double price rate so im more excited about the 4850 then the GTX260 price/perfomance. I say thumbs up for ATi on this.

Sure, thing. It's the best value product on the market. But its just product evolution, with a performance improvement no better than Moores law (approx). No, this isnt a REVOLUTION. This is getting more out of ATI architecture, and *NOT* a case of AMD magic bringing new ideas and orders of magnitude improvements to the design. This is a quantum leap.

We've hung on 3dmk06 for too long. We all know its shortcomings by now. It can't accurately measure the power of these new cards. Even the GTX280 scores around the 9800GTX with 06 which is just BS. There's a GPU score in vantage for a reason. Otherwise that score really isn't that impressive but it also shows the limitations of 06 when it comes to overall GPU power.

I thought as much. I even said so in here (http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=61171&page=2) (post #44).

Sweet! I knew it was coming, I didn't know if that was going to be supported out the door! Looks like I might be keeping my 3870x2 to run alongside my 4870! :rockout:

YES!!!! :toast: It won't hurt having a 3870x2 running next to a 4870x2 :D

Unless someone made a fabrication of that screenie, but i seriously doubt it.
I think i saw it, @ Tom's Hardware (originally) that you could CF different gens of cards but this was when CF became available. I might be recalling wrong, but i don't think so, unless they said it would be possible, on paper, but never implemented it (dunno, really).
EDIT
Maybe a search of that site's articles will yield some results (it will be time consuming, though).
