AMD is possibly developing a low-power processor to compete with Intel’s “Atom” in the emerging Mobile Internet Device (MID) market. The new processor to counter the Atom will be a low-power AMD64-based design according to leaked slides obtained by Hexus. The processor will feature an integrated memory controller, 16-lane 800MHz HyperTransport link, 256KB of L2 cache, and a 1GHz core clock. The new rumored processor with its integrated northbridge and memory controller is expected to have a TDP of 8W compared to the 1.6GHz Atom N270’s 6.5W TDP (2.5 W for the processor and 4W for the Northbridge).

But the Intel uses less power and has more power behind it (1.6 vs 1ghz)... Why would you buy the AMD?

The Atom is mostly based around the PIII architecture while this rumored processor is based around the AMD64 architecture. Comparing them clock for clock is going to be rather silly since they are no where close to the same processor. Only benchmarks will tell which is actually faster.

I didnt know that about the Atom, because I was with PVT about this with the wattage at 1.5w higher with 600mhz less clock cycles. I guess it sounds good. I mean, really, alot of the 1.8ghz Intel and AMD chips are selling well today.

The cpu might be slower but that dosnt mean it isnt more powerful.
See you can get a 4ghz pentium 4 and it will be crapper than a stock core 2.
It basically at first glance looks crap but i bet it has some other feature or the architecture is much more advanced and efficient.
WOAH! its only 1.5w higher consumption thats actually pretty good.
So will this be a shrunk down version of the AMD 64 cpus like the old socket 754 cpu

At least AMD are moving forward in the ATI department. But things a looking good none the less for AMD.

AMD, start working on a power based architecture.. Lets see some Intel killing cpu like the old days..

office pcs dont need fast cpus they need ones that can access data fast and runa lot of programs at the same time, they need lots of ram, dual core for running more apps and fast hard drives and good internet connections.
these small cpus like atom are good for laptops and small media devices no one would use these for a home system when you have sempron ect

it seems that amd is content with just existing and following intel around like a lost puppy.

I thought about that at first, especially the 64bit part... Not enough info is out for us to know anything about them. I remember if you compare my cpu clock for clock with a p4, then the P4 is obviously greater, but not faster. I think the architecture of the PIII is much worse than the fantastic AMD64. I agree, but I think it might be too early to tell who the real winner is. (by means of power, it has already been said)

so native 64 bit .. makes the amd the better choice.

No, most probably its price. People wouldn't notice what's inside the device.
(some)Nokia phones made in Finland use Intel ARM processors while those made in China use Freescale ARM. Same phone, different CPU. Freescale sells their CPUs cheaper.

Core 2 Duo = optimized P3 ;)

umm well you could say that....
C2D=optimized CD=optimized P3
and is it just me or does this spec match a s754 sempron? why the hell now just drop the clock on a s1 sempron and sell it cause thats all this damn thing is?

I thought the C2D was a wholly different architecture than that of the p3/p4 and Centrino. Or built on the centrino. Either way, Id love to be able to put this puppy in my current cellphone with their opengl2.0 gpus :)

I think it's mostly similar b/c of the shorter pipelines.

I think its important for AMD/ATi to stay competative in all areas of CPU architecture aswell as the GPU. This is a great move by AMD/ATi and im confident that their rumoured chip will perform just as well as the Atom.
Like the others basically said, anyone purchasing a system with these kind of specifications are not really requiring high end power to run their day to day business and wouldnt even notice a difference in processors.
It may be some time before we get to see this rumoured chip in circulation by which time im sure the Atom chip would have successfully gained the majority of the marketshare.

C2D = Optimised Pentium M = Optimised Pentium III = Optimised Pentium Pro!
Lol, look at the in-betweens: Core Duo, Pentium 4, Pentium II...
Does this mean Nehalem will be the next Pentium 4?:p
The Atom, as far as I know, is based on RISC, with microcode layered on top so that it is x86 compatible.
This means that it is not nearly as powerful as a similarly clocked Pentium M/C2D: Benchies say it is about the same as a 900 MHz Pentium M.
AM64 arch. is a full-scale architecture, and getting the overall TDP down to 8 watts is a good acheivement, because it will mean the benefits of a "proper" architecture at low power.
All in all, it will probably benchmark better than the Atom.

You are correct.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Core_2_duo <--Uses something else... micro architecture (derived from the PIII-S and the Pentium Pro.)

Can't AMD think outside the 'box'? Same architecture for how long? Accepted there is lot of optimizations but once again same IPCs etc? Can't they just add more IPCs and make a killer 1Ghz cpu to perform the same as 1.8C2D? That will wipe intel's floor and bring the crowd back to AMD. AMD's engineers are all left over ones or what?
Let AMD be damn fast to churn this one out. Everybody knows Intel can bring Atom2 out in days.
8w is still amazing.

Oh jeez.
Atom is nothing like a P3. It is more like the original Pentium, believe it or not. It is an in-order processor stripped down for maximum power savings. Celeron M / Pentium M / Core Duo / Core Solo are the chips most like a Pentium III.

Not as amazing as 6.5 watts.

Is intel counting the mem controller :)
I know it's probably a tiny amount in this CPU for AMD, but it is something extra.
We need benchmarks, then we can bash intel some more

+1, benchies are a must.
I expect this to perform like a socket A processor... 256k cache, 1GHz...

In defense of socket A cpus, the Barton core had 512k. Also that core had some great CPUs.
But they didn't have hypertransport :p
