View Full Version : What resolution do you game at?

This is a poll everyone should participate in (yes, that means you). We have been spoiled with better CPUs, GPUs, motherboards, ram, etc and it's time to know what the TPU community's gaming resolution is.

1440X900. its perfect for my set up. i never played on consoles, so i don't understand the "bigger screen" for pc gaming thing. i've sat in front of a 24in b4 and played through some stuff. for where i sit and my field of vision it makes little difference. heck with my 19in i already find myself sitting back a bit or backing away in an intense part of a game. and i used a 22in for a few weeks and saw literally no difference while gaming. movies and things, sure. if just a modest difference. but games, no. not from where i sit behind the keyboard and put my face ----------------> :)
so 1440X900 is just great by me prolly forever. i might get a 22in or 24in for movies and things and if a game runs good on it, fine. if not, i'll switch over without even noticing i did. i enjoy i can achieve the same framerates / performance as someone with much more expensive hardware simply because i game with a 19in monitor
guess my screen size puts me in the "budget gamer" category
yeah i'll take it :rockout:

Frames Per Second is the ultimate concern for me especially when playing first person games so whilst I do like to run games at my monitors native 1650*1080 resolution, more often than not I find myself downscaling to 1200*800. As everyone knows, running games outwith LCD native resolution does have crappier image sharpness than would be expected otherwise at a specific resolution but like I say for me, super smooth frame rates is everything in gaming......better for your eyes as well.

1440x900 since that's the highest my Acer 19" will go...which is plenty for me, it's a good middle-ground res where with some AA and high IQ settings, games look great, play smooth and my rig doesn't have to be top dollar or the best parts to get there! I've never been one that needed HD Resolution gaming, I'm sure it will happen in the future...but for now, I'm content with 1280x1024 (4:3) / 1440x900 (16:10) as my primary choices depending on what monitor/rig is being used for gaming at the time.

I play at 1680x1050... on a 22 inch dell monitor... i scratched the corner of the screen like 2 days after i bought it  but it just looks like a hair kinda sitting there by the system clock... i was anti-widescreen for a while there, then i realized, "hey, ill just buy a 22 inch..." bringmepenuts--its jsut like gaming at low res, but it looks a little better... i like 1680x1050 mostly because u can turn 4xAA on at that low res and not suffer too much, being as i only have a 7950gt powering my DiabloII.

Stop living in the past, look what steam currently offers:
Bioshock, COD4, Quake Wars, STALKER, GRID, Trackmania United Forever and so much more. Steam is no longer the platform for Valve only, that was many years ago.
The amount of CSS players on Steam only counts for 1% tops these days.

What, do you want him to list all the available resolutions out there? That's what the "I game at a resolution not on this poll" option is for. Widescreen is the preferred format for everyone I know. I'm willing to bet it's mostly people with older monitors, or just won't give up their CRT, that use 4:3 (or in the case of 1280x1024 5:4). 100% of the gamers I know personally that have bought a newer LCD, have all chosen 16:10 screens. 4:3 user have to face it, their days are numbered.

When 4:3 is still the majority? That's funny. Why do I need to buy a new screen when the contrast is still better then the contrast I see on our Full HD TV, better then the contrast I see on my 300$ Samsung widescreen monitor. Oh yeah, and every game ever made supports 4:3 while 16:19 still has issues here and there.

Not for long. The whole industry is migrating over to widescreen. And I'm willing to bet the majority of users on 4:3 are on it because just haven't upgraded yet. Just look at the poll results, 1680x1050 is the norm here so far.
And not everyone can use a CRT. I know I can't. It gives me a headache.

Well, I don't have a crappy small CRT with a low refresh rate. I got a 21" monitor with a 85-100Hz refresh rate and I do have a Samsung Widescreen monitor, but I don't use it for many reasons:
- Websites are so tiny on a widescreen monitor
- Contrast is still not as good enough
- The game that I play the most ( America's Army ) doesn't support it

-They are not. That's totally dependant on resolution, not aspect ratio
-Which model Samsung do you have? I bet it's a Tn-Film panel, which = crap. Check out a S-PVA, M-PVA, or better still, an S-IPS panel, and see if the contrast isn't very good
-Even with a widescreen, you can still play 4:3. I can do 1600x1200 on my monitor without any stretching. (The viewing area is roughly equivalent to 21-22" 1600x1200 monitor)
Those refresh rates still give me a headache. I just can't use CRTs.

The highest res possible relative to what acceptable framerates I can get. My 8800GTS 640MB is getting a bit long in the tooth, so Crysis only ran satisfactorily at 1280x1024 w/o AA. Most other games are still fine at 1600x1200 tho. I try to keep 4xAA on whenever possible. But the 8800GTS is going out in favour of a HD4870 soon, so then things will change again. (I'll probably get a new CPU as well).

With the 4850 card I now have, can crank up details and use both 4 x AA and 8 x AA, hardly any performance hit going to 8x.
I once thought widescreen was a load of rubbish...until I bought one.

1680 x 1050
With the 4850 card I now have, can crank up details and use both 4 x AA and 8 x AA, hardly any performance hit going to 8x.

I usually game at 1440x900 since that's the highest my monitor supports. And yes, I thought widescreen was a bunch of bull until I got one as well.

Yeah I almost resisted getting widescreen too, but the deal on my monitor was too good to pass up, so I took the plunge. And man am I glad I did........

same here. well...i didn't exactly think they were "bull"....but i figured 'wtf do i need that for?'
at the time i didn't even have an lcd. once i gamed on an lcd and it happened to be widescreen i wondered how i did without both for as long as i did...
funny...on a side note when i was researching which lcd and what size / resolution i wanted for myself i came across an old thread from one board or another from '05 and i guess 20in wides were the standard then. 19in came after it seems, and posters on the board were like "19in are coming out? that will never work i would NEVER game or do anything on a 19in. 20in and up or nothing. and 1440X900 and the weird aspect ratio? these are going to fail at any price"
haha suckers.....
EDIT: oh, and as said earlier in the thread....i'm 1440X900
