WOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOOWWOOWOWOWOWEEEEEEEEEEEE EEEEEEEEEEEE, thats awesome news . Now AMD definitely has a nedge over nvidia in technology dept , DX10.1, asymmetric crossfire.

You could do the same thing with a 2900 and a 3870. It was never supported tho.

hmm if thats so i might just get a 4850 to go with my 3870 later if the price is right

I don't see why they wouldn't have that happen with the cards... They have that ability. I don't think Fud is wrong here!

i can't wait to get the 4850 and crossfire it with my 3870x2. two very similar card in specs. both ddr3. both can process 1 teraflop. i hope the 8.6 cat will support it well. i wonder if i can mix my asus 3870x2 with a sapphire 4850. only 9 left on this fxvideo online store. i'm so tempted to pull the trigger. i bet price will go down more once more vendors have the card. i was going to sell my asus 3870x2, but now i will pull it from the for sale forum. this is great news and this is how amd should treat their loyal fans. you don't see nvidia providing sli support for say a 9800gtx with a gtx260 or gtx280. go amd.....

would that mean that maybe you'd be able to xfire a 4870 with a 2900? this xfire will prove very beneficial and people can just upgrade like this instead of having to buy a completely new card, etc.

What!! You actually own a Radeon?? The world is divided by zero

I didn't know you could bridge a HD2900 with a RV670.

really? the slower one will not affect the faster one? this makes the wait just a little more unbearable. i will definitely pull the trigger next week or over the weekend of more 4850s are available online and cheap. i just read the tweaktown review of the 4850 single and cf and the performance is pretty much on par with the gtx 280. the price wins hand down over the gtx 280. i read somewhere that the cheapest gtx 280 is at $599 now. still too expensive compared to a pair of 4850s for $400.

or i might do a 3870x2 + a 4870. my only concern is the ddr5 on the 4870. my 3870x2 might not be able to keep up. correct my math if i'm wrong here, but lets see a 3870x2 can process 1.05 teraflop and the 4870 can process 1.2 teraflop. if combined would that be 2.25 teraflop affectively? woot.

yea i always thought that cross generation crossfire will hinder the better card. the slower card will make the faster card run slower. i hope amd figure out how to optimize crossfire whereby the slower card will be a supporting card to a faster one. what would be better is if the faster card makes the slower one run faster. sort of like automatically overclocking the slower card. i can only dream.

All of the different 3xxx series cards can be CFx. I even went as far to try my 1gb 2900 beast with the 3870, 50, & X2 & they all worked & the results were always faster than the respective 38xx card. They really hit the nail on the head with this setup. Too bad it still scales like garbage in games.

That's SLI - using stock & OC'd cards. CFx only use the resources from each card as a total graphical equation. You might need up with a 15% better performance over the 1st card or you might need up with 70%. It all depends on what that 2nd card is but the baseline for performance is always the card in the first slot. I found that out when I put a 3870 in the 1st slot & a X2 in the 2nd :shadedshu

the 4850 should accommodate your asus 3870x2 nicely :). i have an asus 3870x2 as well, but it's the first version. it runs hot because it doesn't have the dual fans. how's your 3870x2? i wish the egg post the 4850 already. hopefully it'll be cheap on the egg. it's going to be an exciting last week of june. i hope to have the 4850 before 4th of july so i can game.

My 3870x2 must have sat on the self forever because the driver disk was junk once I got the disk install it was and is unreal it will do 920/1098 no problem and even at 45 percent fan(which is quiet as hell) it won't break 50c on the cores. I also got mine for 284.00 after a rebate with two games ranbow six las vegas 2 and company of heros. I have company of heros so after i sell it and ranbow six the card should cost me 230.00 or so.

They will want it if you price it at 265.00 but it's still faster than a 4850 and slower than a 4870 so keep it it's a good card just turn the fan up with smart doctor. The 3870x2 is plenty fast for any game now or for the future.

oh i'm selling it for $250 and taking a big lost since i bought it for $320 a month ago. i'm selling it because it runs too hot and it's a bit loud. i guess i'll be stuck with this 3870x2. i'm leaving my for sale post till tomorrow and take it down if i don't get a buyer. what's your vantage score in performance preset with your 3870x2? mine is around 6,000+ with an amd 5000+ BE oced to 3.3Ghz.

I'm a xp guy. The fan set to 35 percent isn't loud on that card and it is ment to run fine at 80c even. You are gonna find that the 4850 runs just as hot and the 9800gtx do aswell.

i think my 3870x2 has only one fan. that's why the card gets so hot. i dare not touch it even when it's idling. too bad there's no after market cooler for it. i really don't want watercooling. i thought that under load, the fan is working at 100%. it'll be a hot room this summer when i crossfire the 4850 with this 3870x2. i'm afraid to even pump the gpu up a few mhz because it gets so hot. i guess if i crossfire, i don't need to oc. lets see if the egg will have the asus 4850 in stock. btw, are you going to crossfire with an asus 4850 or with another brand? i think i'm going to stick with asus, but i'm sure it won't make a difference if i use a different brand.

IMO dont do it. Your CF will be limited by the slowest component, the 3850/70. See benchmarks. The 4850 is between 40%-65% faster. Ebay that 38xx. Get a new 4850. If you STILL arent happy, then crossfire THAT with another 4850/70

The fan doesn't work at 100 percent more like 35 percent you have to turn it up. At 100 percent it would sound like a leaf blower and would idle at 38c. Turn your fan up with riva tuner or smart doctor. Set it two run all the time at 35 to 45 percent.

It not faster than a 3870x2 it will run fine with it. My 3870x2 will cock up well. That would be over 1400 shaders and 3gpus it would be fast as hell.

the egg has pretty much all brands of the 4850 available. the msi one has a $25 rebate and it's very tempting. i much rather get the asus one as i have the asus 3870x2. i'm going to wait a bit to see if price will drop below $199. so far i heard the 4850 runs pretty hot, yikes. it would be nice if someone makes a dual slot with the fan blowing hot air out. anyone order a 4850 yet?

thats is a really bad Idea . ah well it's kinda dumb to sell your 3870x2 for a 4850 they perform near the same with the nod for now to the 3870x2. Why lose 100 dollars when all ya need to do is turn the fan up and in all the reviews I read the 4850 runs hot enough to burn your fingers. So if heats a concern a 4850 won't help you.

They do get very hot, I already took the heatsink off and cleaned off my 4850 and put some MX-2 on it. Didn't help as much as I would have liked, plus I can't seem to find a program that supports fan control on the card yet, so just have to deal.

that's one of the first things I do with new cards as well; hell, even new motherboards. I've never been impressed with the TIM used at the factory.
If you're up for it, there are some products that work better than MX-2 in non-lapped conditions; you could always try some diamond TIM, for example . . . a bit expensive, though, but supposedly works great when neither the cooler nor the processor have been lapped at all. With lapped components, though, performance is negligible compared to MX-2 or even high-quality AS5/AS7.
OT - has anyone tried CrossfireX HD3000:HD4000 on a Vista setup yet?
