Hi guys,

I have 15 svchost.exe processes runing on windows vista ultimate x86. is this normal? one of the processes is using almost 100mb of ram.

Before I had installed only 2gb of ram and the usual usage was somewhere arround 35-40%. Now i have 4gb instaled although it's only showing only 3070MB and the usage is 38-45%.

Another thing is that I have an bfg9800gx2 video card with 1gb of ddram 3 and in DXdiag it's showing "approx. total memory 1774 MB.

Can anyone help on this please? THANKS in ADVANCE!

I was actually wondering the exact same thing last night. I've currently got 11 instances of svchost running, the largest of which is using 130MB.

I think it's normal for there to be loads of them running, it was the same in XP.

I wouldn't worry about it.

But what about the video memory that's shown in dxdiag? when my card only has 1024mb ram. is it posbile that the card uses some of the DDRAM2 and this is why windows only sees 3070mb...i heard that 3.5gb should be visible in 32bit OS.

anything i have to disable or enable so I can see at least 3.5gb of memory and the 1024mb for my videocard?

thanks!

Yea, that's normal. Windows reserves ~1024MB to communicate with you graphics card.

There is a fix you can try which enables physical adress extension mode, and should get vista to recognise more RAM.

Vista 32-bit systems can detect 4GB RAM. Sometimes the O.S. does not see the 4th GB of RAM but that can be remedied by typing the following command (as Administrator):

BCDEdit / set PAE forceenable

Hope that helps.

i know for sure that the svchost that is using the most resources is usually Aero, the looks. turn it off and it save alot of ram. the other ones are just various services. look in the software thread for a vista tweak thread that is really help full, and should answer alot of questions

This forces Windows Vista X32 to use 4 or more GB of RAM. (PAE stands for Physical Address Extension)

wrong, it only recognises 4gb ram, it cant use the 4gb of ram, there is no workaround aside from installing vista x64, btw your 32bit key should work with the same copy of x64 eg: if you have home premium 32bit, install x64 home premium with the same key

i would do a virus scan just to be sure... svchost is an extremely popular target for viruses and when you things like uber high resource usage from a process like that, its always best to look into it

PAE allows 36 bit addressing if your hardware supports it. Which it most likely doesn't. Doesn't mean he is wrong on the software part though.
