hmmm not too sure what the point of this thread is aside from bashing a company you dont like or some software you dont like, theres no right or wrong answer, although if you were to ask me i would probably say viruses/trojans/spyware/intrusive toolbars/browser hijackers etc etc. :toast:

Acrobat, and the PDF format, have been a godsend to document/information share throughout the word. It was a revolution. There are now competitor products but Acrobat Pro is still the best. (Take a scanned document, OCR it, get text out. amazing). It also prints independly of platform or installed fonts. Whether you print on PC or MAC or it you email it, the printouts are identical.
And unlike .doc files, PDF files are "passive" and cannot execute any code, and are therefore free of macro viruses etc.
Suggesting that acrobat/PDF is the worse software ever is nonsense. Are you sponsored by OOXML?

My personal nemesis with software has to be iTunes + Quicktime. I hate both of them with a passion.

06-21-2008, 07:07 PM
my least favourite software:
Windows Vista
iTunes
Nero 8
Quick Time
Acrobat Reader (PDF file format is great, just dont like the ever more bloated Adobe reader)
Internet Explorer 7
Internet Explorer 8
Kaspersky Internet Security
Norton Internet Security
Mcaffe Internet Security
And i also hate software companies who are bringing out new versions of there software that have stupid windows vista orientated things, like crappy searchbars, slower vista style skins, and make them so simple that its hard to do anything that's worth doing, Nero 8 is a prime example.

Bluetooth.
Impossible to get drivers. Company was taken over by new company (broadcom?), who took control over assets but WOULDNT release drivers to public. "Go get them from your dead vendor" type of stuff. AWFUL.
All I wanted was a set of standard drivers so the PC could connect with my HP PDA.
Maybe things are better now. But I had such a bad experience I avoid bluetooth like the plague.

vista, not to be confused with server 2008, 2008 is more what vista should have been, tho there are some niggling issues with it.......stuff thats just annoing to an uber geek that dosnt like being treated like a mac user(display properties in vista suck!!!!!)
i have others but those are the worst.
as to the guy who said "registry cleaners" most suck, but the old regcleaner from jv16 and winaso registry optimizer are worth having, i ran winaso on a buddys mothers laptop, took it neerly an hour to run, it found over 15,000 problems, cleaned them up, the laptop instantly went from being slow and barly useable to being snappy and neerly bugg free(its xp, it wont ever bee bugg freeeee)

yeah but alot of people have problems with kaspersky, i have had to remove it from peoples systems because it wasnt playing nice with other apps(it once kept blocking spysweeper from running........retail spysweeper........)
its better the norton, mcafee or the like, but it at least from my point of view isnt better then nod32 of properly setup and updated f-prot........and for the prices nod32 and f-prot are normaly a better buy, i know you can get a licence that covers all the computers in your house for 29bucks on f-prot, it says 5, but if you ask them, they will tell you it covers all your home systems, if u got 8-10 thats fine, and it installs on any windows version x86 or x64 :)

And simply putting an exclusion rule in Kaspersky takes care of the the app problems. I've had a few problems like that, and it takes care of the problem 100% of the time in all my cases so far.
Kaspersky can also be had for cheap if you look in the right places. As low as $15 for the Security Suite, $10 for just the AV. It also covers both x64 and x86.
I've tried NOD32 a bunch of times, and I hate it. It's a great AV, don't get me wrong, but it's a PITA to configure the way I like.

they are easyer to configuar, tho i never really had problems with 2.x just a diffrent menu layout not made for nabs :P
f-prot got alot of dissrespect in the 3.x days because its gui wasnt pretty, infact i admit its pretty ugly really, BUT it does the job!!!! personaly im more function over form as long as the form dosnt make me jump thru a bunch of hoops or type command line crap to do what i want :P

as to display properties, rclick desktop use to bring up a multi tab window that lets you do res/color changes, as well as screensaver, themes, exct, now you get a stupid window that has links to each item, that then lead you to each tab, insted of them all as 1 window with multi tabs, just more BULLSHIT that NOBODY but maby a mac user needs......

i had kaspersky suite... it was FUCKING HELL.... i had no peace whatsoever.... shitty windows kept causing problems with games and would pop up for "windows system service is trying to run paint.exe, it might be a virus... would you like to continue?" on top of that the disable kaspersky would not work have the time and was extremely laggy and usually took like 10 tries to enter an 18 digit password that i can enter with ease on other places i use it and get it right the first time. come on.. and guess what? it didn't even protect me from some trojany thing that i got.. that nod32 easily got rid of without making me reboot 500 times like kaspersky.... the firewall was absolute crap and i will not go back there.
my system runs efficently with:
zone alarm pro firewall (never annoys me and the very occasional setting popups are out of the way and dont mess up up my games)
nod32 (very silent, dont ever realise its there.. doesn't hog much system resoucres while doing a daily scan like kaspercrap did)
weekly-biweekly scans by adaware and spybot search and destroy and hijack this..
my system couldn't be happier quieter (in terms of protection software annoying me) and more efficent.

i had kaspersky suite... it was FUCKING HELL.... i had no peace whatsoever.... shitty windows kept causing problems with games and would pop up for "windows system service is trying to run paint.exe, it might be a virus... would you like to continue?" on top of that the disable kaspersky would not work have the time and was extremely laggy and usually took like 10 tries to enter an 18 digit password that i can enter with ease on other places i use it and get it right the first time. come on.. and guess what? it didn't even protect me from some trojany thing that i got.. that nod32 easily got rid of without making me reboot 500 times like kaspersky.... the firewall was absolute crap and i will not go back there.

the reason you had problems with kaspersky is because you ASKED for that when it started up. It asks if you want normal or advanced mode, and you chose advanced... normal mode doesnt have the popups at all. Give a try and choose the basic/normal options next time.
and lol daily scans... use a real time scanner, and you never need them. kaspersky also has an option to only scan changed/new files, so the first scan can take a while but future ones are done in seconds (or minutes on a laaarge drive)

The only time I get pop-ups is when something tries to get in thru the firewall, or there's a real threat (and ocasionally the false positive, but very rarely, and all AV are prone to it).
The Kaspersky firewall has never messed with any of my games when left on the normal settings. Not only that, but KIS is more lightweight than the Zone Alarm/NOD32 combo.
I'm the dead opposite. Nothing but problems with Zone Alarm. Even if I disabled it, it would still filter some apps.

i really dont want to go back to kaspersky lol, even if i misconfigured it to advanced mode.. i still hated it, and i'd rather have power without annoyance.. i know my combo might eat more resources.. but way more peace then with kaspersky.. and as for real time.. i believe that nod32 and zonealarm are realtime, i just have daily scans since i disable them sometimes for certain activities on my comp.....
while you guys feel comfortable with kaspersky.. i feel more comfortable without seperate programs, instead of suites.. and i choose companies that are excellent in their fields.. and dont take other products from them (for ex. i dont have antivius from zonealarm etc), because i want the products that they are good at, not the other bullcrap.

Well, there's really nothing wrong with going about things in that manner. You've found a combo that works for you. But that certainly doesn't make Kaspersky crappy software.

Here are the most bloated software I remember now:
Norton - good alternative Tuneup Utilities or/and CCleaner
Azureus!!! (now called Vuze) - best alternative uTorrent
Windows Live messenger - good alternative Pidgin
Nero!! - best alternative ImgBurn (actualy writes standard DVD and double layer DVD better than Nero)
Quicktime - best alternative CCCP + Quicktime Alternative or just VLC
ZoneAlarm! - best alternative is the original windows firewall with a sturdy security tuneup :P
Skype!!!! - this is by far the bloatiest software I've encountered.

Microsoft Office Assistant - the original "annoying pop-up" that there is no known way of 100% disabling or excosizing from your system. Just when you think it's been banished back to it's inter-planetary netherworld, it resurfaces again with its key-stroke checking and spelling recommendations. It's been inspiring internet malware coders for ages now; they probably all have a little paper-clip with buggy-eyes gorilla glued to their monitors.
Microsoft Internet Explorer ver 1-6 - will consume your available storage space quicker an army of 5 year olds can consume a handful of pizzas at a birthday party. 100% pack rat, 0% efficient. Just try and remove even half of it's accumulated internet junk, and watch it's performance slow to a speed on par with a Galapagos tortise out for a stroll. And should you be brave enough to attempt to excorsize this MS plugin, you best make sure you've got your Windows CD already in your optical drive cause a Windows re-install is emminent.

Itunes and Windows Media Player, I hate them itunes because it won't let me use my g15 shortcuts and is kinda buggy and windows media player because it can't sync with my ipod. I love vlc player: can play almost any format that I use.
Edit: also battlefield 2 since it lags too much and is buggy
Hate Apple for making you deep throat the crap that is Ilife.
First, Adobe Acrobat. It sucks, it hangs and is unable to end itself mebey it should become emo suicidal. There are free alternatives and they work as does the pdf format. Adobe however has many updates and installs startup items as does Apple, which brings me to number 2.
Second, Apple for the shit that is quicktime/itunes/ipodservice/ituneshelperservice/startup items. Bravo to them for making a mediocre player that is free and tries to take over your file associations unless you don't allow it. WMP at least has no other associated bullshit, but it does bring me to number 3.
Third, WMP. It hangs when you have a huge media library. I dare not introduce it to over 15-16GB of media or it has a shitfit and hangs the whole PC as it is aintegrated part. It stutters and skips when browsing even that much media, perhaps the idea of prefetching is reserved for other components and as I only have 1.5Gb of RAM free it doesn't want to use anymore, and god forbid it could use more than one core. The idea is treason I tell you.
Fourth, Realplayer, but that has been covered by Maddox and others. Does anyone remember the good days of the dancing sheep? When it didn't have a "go gold" popup every 5 seconds.
Fifth, Ataris bullshit Test Drive Unlimited. Cheat cheat cheat for so many. Then for the majority Lockup, corrupt profile, lockup, lockup, play 15 minutes and lockup. Dear god so much potential, bought a momo wheel, lockup, bought new video card lockup, bought new RAM, lockup, no overclock lockup, underclock lockup, reinstall lockup. etc... rinse repeat. Then Atari has the balls to ban someone who made a actual fix for their fuckup.

Gotta admit though, Windows reserves a portion of the volume at an absolutely wrong place. c:\Windows ; System32 ; Program Files are left very little space between the start (of the volume) and the beginning of the MFT (reserved) area.

Amen - I was going to vote for real player.
However, I think the PRIZE goes to DELL's OEM XP installation disc - there is more worthless bloatware than you can shake a hard drive at, and it's almost impossible to uninstall all of it.
(BTW - the solution to that is make a copy of the OEM install disk, but remove the \OEM directory - you end up with a clean install of XP ).

Would be hard - near impossible to create a new game every year, that would include updating and refining the physics and renaming and recreating about 100'000 players. Also sometimes they change the game engine .. all in a year.

PES doesn't exactly cut it either with me they both have terrible unfluid movement, I reckon the best football games were fifa 2000 because it was fun and not trying to be all next gen (or past gen as us pc goers would say) and technically PES is copying Fifa since it came out first which is probably copying something else as well.

Oh, I forgot, every NFS after Most Wanted. Carbon and Pro Street didn't cut out. They don't have a good story.
I'll take that a step further. Every NFS after Underground 2.

quicktime and itunes for the simple reason that I get dumped to desktop while running games so that it can ask me if i want to update it.
It just makes me shout at my computer.
"AHH I never opened itunes today, why would I want too update it right now??!!"
by the way, Jeno I have that theme too, it looks sweet and it matches with Vista's theme better than IE7, ahaha.
Mussels, search aero fox under firefox addons.

The new itunes is pretty great imo (w/ cover flow and grid organizing). Still a bit sluggish, but the organization, simplicity, coolness, and customization potential of it are great, better than most media players I've used. Worst software? Well of course virus's would take that crown. All software has some good parts, even if it isn't that great. I won't hate, if it's free then I like it, if it's malicious than I don't, if it costs money then I probably don't care (unless it's an os or game).
My new POS software is Norton Goback...it is nothing but phail. It changes the partitions and mbr, so if you HDD drives, you will have a nightmare to recover.

I'm not really sure what to pick.. Windows Vista is quite alright, ME should be crap but I can't pick that one as one of the most stable computers I've come across had ME on it, the antivirusthings comes down to personal taste.... I don't really know. Some of them random "Free memory!!!111!!"-things maybe.
That, and Realplayer.

LoL, I guess I'm the only one who actually likes realplayer, what has everyone got against it? Apart from the fact you have to fill in your postcode upon install and pay them to use all the features and.... oh wait, I think I've answered my own question :p
Here's my list of shitware:
Nero 8 (bloated as hell, confusing to use)
McAfee (absolute shit, couldn't catch a fish at an aquarium)
Windows Media Player (Library is terrible, supposed to be organised as easy to use but isnt)
Internet Explorer (for obvious reasons, Opera FTW :rockout:)
iTunes (tries to force itself onto your computer, even when you DL quicktime which is sometimes required for some sites, you HAVE to DL iTunes :( which is about 45MB)
